First & foremost I believe Mr Knight (Martin, not Frank?) to be one of the leading back specialists and would highly recommend him. There is nothing to be afraid of, every step is explained to you and the care is second to none.

I am 7 weeks post op and still have problems, and had another MRI scan yesterday to see what is happening. I had suspected problems at 3 levels and Mr Knight operated at one of them, so it could be that I may need more surgery. I would not hesitate to go through the procedure again as I have complete trust in him.

Good luck for next week and listen to the advice you are given, and adhere to it. Don't try to push yourself to do anything sooner than they recommend you to.

Well, I had a consultation yesterday based on the results of the MRI scan and it has shown that I still have two prolapsed discs. One at L4/L5 on the right (as before) and one at L5/S1 on the left.

I have four options:
1.Give it more time (though after nine weeks specialist does not think there will be any further improvement)
2.Undergo an “open micro discectomy” at L4/L5 and L5/S1 (my current specialist does not do open surgery so another specialist would need to chosen)
3.Aware state surgery “ELD&F” at L4/L5 approached from the left this time, rather than the right. Further surgery may still be required at L5/S1.
4.Two level fusion at L4 to S1

I have no idea what to do at the moment as my brain has turned to mush. I am very disappointed to be back at square one (so to speak) but I had suspected as much from very early on.

Why is it 20% cheaper in France, to do the same procedure ?

I'm just curious, since it seems a no-brainer that you would go to France if you wanted this particular surgery, and could save £2,000.

Whats so strange about that? Its not Martin Knight who charges you for surgery. Its a hospital or institution where he performs certain surgery. Often same surgeon works at several places.

Same thing in Croatia costs around £5,000.

If it is the very same procedure being done by Mr Knight himself, then I think anyone considering the surgery (who had to fund it themselves) would go to France.

It was the mention of France that sparked my interest since I researched another surgeon (Jean Destandau) reported as a pioneer in spinal surgery (he performed a procedure for footballer John Terry).

I'm also aware of the cheaper surgery in Croatia, but that would be a different surgeon (Dr. Robert Saftic) and not exactly the same procedures as those listed on the Spinal Foundation site, if I'm reading it correctly.

Yes, same procedure at different facility in different country. Different price is expected, at least by me.

Doctor Destandau uses his own endoscope and his own technique, he is teaching surgeons worldwide and he is also considered one of the world leaders in MISS.

Doctor Robert Saftic does the same thing with different technique and endoscope. He is doing Anthony Yeung's technique. He performes everything except endoscopic laser foraminoplasty with laser, he does the same thing with different tools.

Mr Knight does not offer surgery in France anymore as he says the strength of the euro has made operating costs there no cheaper. I tried in July and got a definite No from him, he only does private surgery in Huddersfield now. Seemed wierd to me though, so if anyone has any other information?

Hey anyone from this conversation I too am thinking of Mr M Knight as I've had L4/5 spinal nerve root decompression in 2009 and was not a complete success but have been giving an option to have spinal fusion but my surgeon doesn't recommend it because I'm a 30yr old with an active lifestyle "well use to" but he is saying to live with it or take chances with spinal fusion so have looked at options and am hearing good feed back about Mr Knight so anyone who has positive or negative info on him can you please reply to me i would like to chat about it!

my condition is a spondylolisthesis grade 1 with a broken facet joint I had spinal decompression in 2009 but was not complete success in a good way though as it was a constant pain before but now is intermittent so was told the only other option is spinal fusion as i have movement in my spine and the decompression had freed up my sciatic nerve from a constant pinch and now is pinched intermittently and not sure if Mr M Knight can help with this problem.

hey maz am thinking of Knight too as I have issues in my L4/5 area with sciatica down right leg but ive had spinal decompression in 2009 which helped me a little now it is intermittent instead of constant pain now but surgeon sai's spinal fusion is only option but doesn't recommend for me cause I am young he sai's and told me too live with it or take the gamble with fusion so need some info with Mr Martin Knight? can you please give me info about him and how did your surgery go with Mr Knight and are you pain free?

I had an Endoscopic Laser Foraminoplasty and Decompression procedure to cure my 'L 4/5 sciatica' at the BMI Huddersfield in October 2008, performed by Mr. Knight himself.

MR KNIGHT'S (ELFD) PROCEDURE, DID WHAT IT SAID ON THE TIN!!

Or, in his case, the 'web site'.

Everything from the initial consultation to the hospital release, went as per his descriptions.

The consultation lasted just under of 2 hours, and he as was very thorough and considerate. He said things that I have never heard from any Surgeon, before or since. Those 2 hours cost me £200, the same my NHS Surgeon charged (privately), and he gave me just 15 mins.

The preparations, extra requirements and information before the surgery was 1st class. During the operation, I was able to tell him which nerves were pain producing and which were not, this is because of the aware state/ twighlight anaesthetic.

Due to complictaions, my op lasted 3 hours instead of one and a half, but I was able walk unaided 30 minutes after I came back from theatre.

I walked home the next day, using my legs, taxis and trains.

I had 'no' post op complications, scarring and only required a sterisrip plaster and one stitch. My GP said it was the 'most neat' thing he had ever seen!!

This is the most minimally invasive spinal surgery available in the UK if not the world today, but don't take my word for it, read his web site and compare with other surgeons who claim to use MISS techniques.

The truth is out there people, do your research!!

There are few minimally-invasive surgical options that can help patients avoid fusion. Not sure if this is for you, but you can try with second opinion.

I had no surgery with dr. Knight, but I follow his work, work of his foundation and work of other pioneers of minimally-invasive spinal surgery.

This is definitely the future, and this procedures will completely overwhelm standard open back surgery procedures.

I am not the best advert for surgery with Martyn Knight, as unfortunately having undergone ELD&F at one level, I have ongoing problems.

If your problems are at one level only, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Martyn Knight, but my problem is more complex.

I would definitely recommend that you have a consultation with him as he is very thorough and will tell you what can and can't be done.

Well folks. I had my operation done with Mr Martin Knight. The pain is gone - I can walk upright - my effective height has "increased" by 1.5 ins. The pain in my leg and back is gone. I am absolutely furious at the "system" - that made it so difficult for me to find him and also reluctance to pay. Trust me - he did what he said he could and 10 days later ............I feel just great !!
