SHOT, MASSAGING SERVICE
For those looking for some erotic body rub and a 'happy ending', Bengaluru certainly doesn't disappoint. Bangalore Mirror went undercover to get to the slimy underbelly of the city's illegal 'massage parlours' that are clearly rebranding prostitution and lurking, invisibly, online
Locating an illegal massage parlour and booking an appointment for an hour-long session of exotic 'sandwich massage' or even an improvised, erotic version of the Hawaiian or Swedish body rub in the city just takes a few seconds more than cooking a bowl of two-minute noodles. Who would want to fly out to Thailand when desi versions of the same techniques are offered just a short drive away at Indiranagar, Koramangala, JP Nagar, Jayanagar, HSR Layout, Domlur and Shivajinagar.
You could be asked to come to a specific location and then be directed to the joint, or you could be picked up and taken to the establishment, as part of the deal.
Interestingly, the oldest profession in the world seems to have embraced the IT boom and opened shop in the virtual world. We were able to contact at least 30 illegal massage and sex service centres operating in the city where anyone with access to the net and a telephone could call and fix up an appointment.
The services ranged from "Thai massages" — including the popular sandwich massage, the oily Nuru massage, Tantra message, nude massage and a full service that concluded with intercourse and a joint shower. The city has an array of legitimate spas, therapeutic massage centres and salons. But it also has establishments that thrive in the grey zone, or along the borderlines of full-fledged flesh trade, that exploit their women employees, who often draw a monthly fixed salary and are allowed an occasional tip.
To take you to the underbelly of that side of Bengaluru, Mirror posed as a decoy customer on Sunday and contacted as many as 15 illegal massage centres in the city and managed to fix appointments for their "exotic services" without any major hassle.
HERE'S HOW IT WENT
We decided to follow up with one of our appointments. The main agent, flawlessly in English, instructed us to go to Anil Kumble Circle near MG Road Metro station. The deal was fixed at Rs 3,000 for one and a half hours with a "Body-to-Body massage" and full service package.
After arriving at the spot, we tried to contact the agent but the call went unanswered. Within seconds, we got a call from another number and a new voice on the other end asked us to wait for a few minutes. In a couple of minutes, we received another call, this time from an Ahmedabad-based number, informing us that he was on the way with the massage girls and asked us to stay near LIC building at Anil Kumble Circle.
After sometime, we received another call from the same Gujarat number and he instructed us to move away from Anil Kumble Circle and head towards Golden Palms Canteen near Central Street and Cubbon Road junction. He also assured us that he has a safe apartment near Cubbon Road where the service will be provided. As promised, he arrived within a few minutes in a silver Maruti Ritz (KA02 MD 6081) along with a driver and two women in the rear seat. We, of course, 'called off the deal' sighting an 'unforeseen development', to which he agreed after a brief round of argument with the agent.
"We have a very safe place near Cubbon Road and there will be no issues. You can choose one of these two girls," said the agent, while trying to salvage the deal.
TECH SAVVY TOO
A majority of the illegal massage parlors that operate in the city seems to have migrated to the internet for marketing, and operate out of residential and semi-residential areas in rented properties to avoid snooping eyes of the police and their snitches. Akanksha, a matron operating out of Indiranagar, told BM that she has 12 girls — including those from the North, South and the North-East — working at her massage centre.
"We offer Body-to-Body massage with 'happy ending' and 'oily massage with extra services' for Rs 2,500 an hour. We will charge Rs 5,000 for sandwich massage. Come to Indiranagar 80-Ft Road near Airtel office and I will give you directions to reach my place. We are a hygienic place and provide contraceptives to our customers and also have shower facilities," Akanksha told BM.
Another matron, who identifies herself as Shalini from Indiranagar, offered the same services to BM but at a slightly higher rate of Rs 3,000 an hour and Rs 6,000 for a 'Thai massage' but she asked us to come near Sony Centre on 100-Ft Road.
Rushali, another erotic massage provider in Indiranagar, told BM that she was willing to experiment for extra tips and also hinted that she operates out of a rented residence in the Indiranagar locality.
An online portal called 'flipspa' claims to have branches in Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur, Jammu, Lucknow and Pune and offers the option of online booking on its website. The portal also offers an aggregated list of other "exotic" massage centres in the city.
Alisha Body Spa, which claims to operate near Domlur, told BM that it offers erotic versions of the Balinese massage and aromatherapy message in addition to regular Thai and Body to Body massages.
"Come to Domlur and we will give further directions to our centre. You can also choose the services and your masseuse," said the woman operating the joint.
REBRANDING OF SORTS
According to sources, even the traditional prostitution rackets are now marketing themselves as massage and escort service providers in the city. There are also a couple of gay-only massage centres also thriving in the city where the services will cost Rs 2,000 for an hour, but are more discreet and cautious while dealing with customers.
Last week, a 22-year-old youth attempted suicide after Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths raided a massage centre running out of a commercial complex on D Chandrasekharan Road.
NS Megharikh, city police commissioner, told Mirror that there were many legally operating massage parlours in the city and specifically identifying illegal centres was practically a difficult task for the police. He, however, added that the CCB and city police conduct raids whenever they get information about any illegal activity at these centres.
"We will focus on these illegal massage centres that are operating out of the internet in the city, and take action against them in the coming days," he said.
WHAT TO DO?
The issue of frequent police raids at massage centres and spas in the guise of preventing "immoral" activities has often been a contentious issue with legitimate parlour owners often seeking legal remedy. Madras High Court had ordered in a similar case in 2014 that the police should not interfere in the functioning of these centres in the absence of a proper law to regulate them. There is a proposal to bring wellness sector establishments including spas, massage centres and salons under the ambit of the Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act, to regulate them. According to Prarthana Pradutt, owner of a popular spa and salon in the city, just the presence of some individuals indulging in illegal activities does not reflect on the wellness sector as a whole. "People are aware of the reputed centres in the city. Just like any other business sector, there are only a few individuals who indulge in such activities in the wellness sector too," she added.
BM pointed out the issue of women from other states bring brought to the city to be employed in either prostitution or at sex massage centres, to Manjula Manasa, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women. She said the police and other enforcement agencies should deal with such cases in a stern manner. Women caught in exploitative situations should also be made aware of their options such as whom to approach to ensure their rescue and rehabilitation, she said.
