As a bloke from a working class background in Bradford (anyons seen Rita, Sue and Bob too- that was the estate I was brought up on) I can tell you that the Yob elements are prevalent in all countries. Im back in Uk at mo and can't get back to Phuket quick enough. There is a total lack of moral responsibility and just the level of aggression I find here, means I can't even be bothered to go to the pub (who would have thought that!). I just hope that the chavs from UK never get out to Phuket. Of course it's not all class based, most working class are top people and the Hooray Henries can be prats at times (have you seen the offspring of the rich in Seduction arsing around), but I do feel that Britain is falling apart at the moment.

i'am an aussie , on a low income & fly to Thailand on low budget airlines, i am not a yobbo & not a criminal & never would steal from a Thai or anybody .not all aussies are yobbo's.
i have been going to Thailand since 1999, & in that time have seen "yobbo" aussies, it is embarressing to see the way they act (being an Aussie myself), & thats why we sometimes get a bad name,
but i think all countries have there "yobbo's"

In another forum, there was this Aussie who said he came from the entertainment capital of the world - gold coast and he knew all the laws of nightlife and it's his 1st time to Phuket.

I guess with that kind of attitude, it's not going to help.

Other board members and i tried to give him some advise that the law in Thailand is so different but he wouldn't listen and called us old folks silly, names...etc.

Whats interesting is reading this and relating it to Europe. I go to the Amsterdam 7s rugby tournament every year, and I have lived and worked in Holland. With the advent of cheap low cost flights, Amsterdam has become more accessable to a certain sub society.

I believe IMO that this has created more of a problem for the dutch as the red light district is no longer seen as a fun place to be, it is becoming more intimidating and the amount of fights and scuffles seems to be rising. When I lived there you could walk round the area and feel safe but now the chav culture seems to be reeking its wrath.

An example is this year one of the lads who travels with us every year had his wallet stolen, not by a dutch or even the drug dealers but by some scum bag from our own country, when he was confronted the lad threatened to "cut" our mate, what he didn't realise was that he would have to cut around 30+ rugby players.
Wallet was handed back but only by using the same strong arm tactics that these people seem to understand.

Friends who live in Dam have said that the amount of crime and violence in the red light district is shocking and it is rising year on year. Whilst I was there this year a friend of mine told me that the mayor has decided to try and clean up the city, and he has started to revoke the late licensing, and I believe he is looking to impose a smoking ban on bars.

I'd hate to see Phuket go the same way. LOS is still seen as an exotic destination for us Brits, and to have it deflied and spoilt would be a real shame. I think the girl probably was having a bit of horse play but she got caught and therefore she should face the punishment. I feel sorry for the young boy who was probably forced to go and sell to drunk "farangs" at 1am.

I saw the kid and an older member of the group the following morning. They were out riding bicycles. No, he didn't pay a fine, he just had to tell what happened, and apparently he also got a very good price for the stolen hat, probably what people back home would call "list price", no discount.

I was in Amsterdam for the first time this year, and the first impression was that it was unpleasent because of gangs of drunk/pot smoking chavs.
The second night I thougt most of them where dutch.
Then there were the cocain sellers, by the way got offerd cocaine in Patong for the first time in may.
My point is that , its very good that Phuket is to expensiv for menny.
That said, I dont like any kind of loudmouth people who like to draw attention to thems self just because thay are drinking.
Feeling safe is one of the big proes of comeing to Patong

Since the 80`s the size of the working class in the uk has shrunk and correspondingly the size of the middle class has risen a little and that of the underclass - or `chavs` has risen enormously.
One thing that really does get my goat is the lumping together of the working class and the underclass whereas in fact they are completely different entities. Witness;

Of course these are generalities and there are of course many from a working class background that are gits, and many from the underclass who turn out ok, but these are sharp divides.
