1. You DO need a Birth Certificate or Passport or Passport Card to re-enter. Though it seems they allow only with a DL sometimes, but it will involve a hassle or questioning session
2. Your passport or Pass card or Green card is scanned and entries are RECORDED, but PASSPORT IS NOT STAMPED.
Incidentally there has been some uproar about the number of years (15?) they keep the records of all border crossing. And there was a debate on CNN about it. It is possible that a spiteful spouse/lawyer can subpoena the records for Divorce litigation ! So be nice to your spouses when you cross over and back
