PICKPOCKETS IN TAIPAN- Gentlemen Beware

I got back last week from Phuket, and I went to Taipan, one thing I found was just before I left I was frisked by two ladies who ran their hands down my body. and stopped when they realised my hands were in my pockets. When I turned round I notice they were doing the same to other people, i think this might be the culprits!

Same here, but I also bring an ATM-only card, in case I need more money, but this card cannot be used as a credit card, so if lost no big deal.

I normally go out with nowt and borrow what I need from Gson! Sorted.

I nearly boo boo'd last trip over when I realised I was wearing a $2K watch when out and about! I bought his little cheapo chinese thing from a street stall near to the Patong villa and wore that for the rest of the trip.

Best advice earlier in the thread, don't take out more than you are prepared to lose or.......run up a tab with your friendly bar owner!

I was in the same situation ($1K), but resorted to my cell phone as the time keeper and left the watch in the hotel safe.

Definately an ouch! I've a couple of expensive watches. My everyday watch is an IWC GST Aquatimer I bought in about 1995 (Obviously not the new model which I am not a fan of) and out here I wear the Breitling Emergency. Both titanium beasties and two watches I've not seen copied to such a standard you could be fooled by them.

The Breitling will be sold when I eventually leave here and my son has asked that I leave him the IWC.

I know $10 dollar watches also tell the time, I know people who religeously won't wear a watch but I like my particular timepieces. The Breitling is practical and the IWC has actually increased in value since I bought it.

I also tend to like nicely made watches.. There is a huge technical difference between a poor copy and a legit swiss made piece.. Tho I now no longer wear one unless I have a plane to catch or similar..

Even then mines a bit too bling for asian relaxing.. Would like a GMT II in all black or a Seadweller (or sub) in all black to be less overstated.. Its a shame the really convincing fakes have become so hard to find.. Havent seen anything that would really pass proper inspection in a long time.

Never used a wallet, cash in front pocket with a hankerchief on top. Any wandering hands down there and my extra sensitive detection equipment will soon sound the siren

last night wednesday i had money taken out of my pocket. it was even the front pocket. when i went to pay for a beer i was missing a 500 baht note. i was only in there for less then five minutes and noticed right away. quickly thought about the girl who bumped into me by the toilets. immediately went back there saw the girl gave her a hand jesture where is my money. she immediatley pulled a wad of money out of her pocket and i happily took my 500 baht note back. went back to the bar. asked to talk to a manager but the staff did not seem to really care about the incident. very glad that i very rarely carry alot of money. could have cost me alot.
