So for all you know, there might not be any solution (at least no solution using the rules you've stated). :

Where did you find this riddle? Does it actually say that lines can't serve multiple purposes? Does it actually say that lines cannot go through the houses? And does it actually say that there is a solution using those rules?

Or are you just assuming all these things and expecting us to adhere to your idea of how it ought to be solved?

I found your riddle on a few sites, and in all of them the solution has lines going through the houses. Also, none of them says anything about not using multi-purpose lines. So obviously you assumed those "rules" existed based on your own inability to think "outside the box" which (not surprisingly) is what's required to solve this puzzle.

i figured you would all figure that out on your own, but i guess not

lines can curve, but it still won't work
there's no out of the box thinking, just connect each house to each box
no line sharing, no going through anything, no intersecting lines

sorry for all those who didn't figure out that part
you can whine about my rules all you want, but it still won't get you the satisfaction of knowing you've completed the task

You also never specified if they had to be lines, i.e. straight, or if we could add curves in them

if we can use curves then you can just go around the outside and have the lines meet the areas in back of the buildings

But then their imaginary continuations might intersect according to you

A line that never crosses itself does not "intersect at all points." You may as well say that a straight line (like a longitudinal or latitudinal line) that goes around the world until the two ends meet intersects itself at all points ffs. :

Did I somehow think too far outside the box for your liking?

If there is a certain number of lines that must be used in order for me to produce the solution you find acceptable, then please let me know how many I need, because I can only adhere to the rules that I'm made aware of.

So ... how many lines do I need to draw in order to "recreate" (because apparently that's what we're trying to do here) Ruth's solution to the problem? :dontknow:
