Ah The Blue Flame......yep we followed that tried and trusty recipe, and copies of it are all over the muslim world where westerners gather!!!!!
Nearly cost me my life though as one night the room in which about five of us were drinking, was raided by the Libyan army (which also doubles up for the police in the desert) and one Libyan soldier decided to pull a very large pistol, **** the bloody thing and hold it to my head whilst he shouted all sorts of Libyan gabble at everybody and he was shaking like a leaf, so as you can understand I feared that he might just pull the trigger. This went on for about five minutes and I was truly terrified.
Eventually a few of his mates arrived and we were ushered off into a room, with about five guards with rifles standing over us menacingly for many hours. They wanted as to sign a declaration to say that we had been brewing this stuff and selling it to the Libyans, which we hadn't, we drank the bloody stuff ourselves.
Also signing this declaration would have put us in very serious trouble because relations with the West in the mid Seventies were not at their best and a couple of expats had gone missing for a few months before turning up in Tripoli severely beaten to within an inch of their lives.
However two Americans had been selling the stuff so we dobbed them in (no more than they deserved), then sent a telex to them in the States and told them not to return.
The things we do for booze........ then there is the Nigerian escapade, however that can wait for another post!!!!
