If you knew that the bars shut at 2am, then it wouldn't be that much of a problem, although I wouldn't like it as I have never liked drinking in the afternoon and prefer to start at 9 or 10pm. But like others have said, you dont know until it is suddenly upon you. Then you never really know when the restrictions end.

For me, if I was a hardcore mongrer, then it wouldn't bother me. Like you say, the bars are only there for the girls to be available in. I on the other hand prefer to sit at bars, chat with friends, take the piss out of weirdly dressed French/Germans/Americans and wonder why Nicke never smiles! :rofl:

But even when the bars shut at 2am, there are generally bars still open if you know where to look. Although the banter tends to be not that good.

Why fizzles by 4 ?? Graham reported coming out of baya to daylight so 6:30 plus a month or two back.

Some people like the nightlife, 2am closure of everything in an international party place is a little early.

I don't know about you guys...but I have NEVER had any problems meeting babes here regardless of where they work...bars, massage parlors, offices, restaurants...I don't care what it is...Look. lets face it, whoever they are, if you have the money, they (for the most part) will go...Yes I know why the girls come here...but what I'm saying is the bars isn't the only place to find them

The group of shack bars opposite Bangkok Residence (top end of San Sabai) are now suffering.They don't even open till midnight and don't get anyone till about 3am.:zzz:

If the Bangla Soi bars would get open with girls earlier the crowd would asjust their drinking habits.:

I was in Bkk a few months back, and things started closing around one a.m.
All looking shut by 2am.
The Issan , now Phuket , bg I was with couldnt believe that the 'big apple' closed so early. ( and of course it doesnt if you know where to look)
But I for 1 , even being an early hour drinker, found it very hard to adjust...

If this 2am closing sticks, and it has done in the recent past for a whole high season, it isn't necessarily bad for anyone but the discos. People will start to go out earlier, smart bar owners will make sure their girls are in the bars by 8pm (a good policy regardless of the closing times, 'Hello' to the first two bars on Soi Lion duh) and the party starts earlier.
The discos on the other hand suffer badly as they really only make any money after 2am.
Bar owners will find that their bar girl staff become a little easier to control, a lot more punctual and work a lot harder if the only place they can pick up a punter is in the bar they actually 'work' in.
When the discos are open all night, many staff are using your bar as somewhere to hang out, get a free loom and food until the discos get going, so bar owners should rejoice. You are no longer subsidising the discos.
I fully expect the situation to return to normal, maybe even before I finish this response, however, if it doesn't bar owners should be very happy.

2AM closing hasn't been enforced in Chiang Mai for a long time
I still close at 2AM anyway because many customers walking in are
already drunk (spewing, sleeping) and often abusive to the girls.
If you aren't making the rent, sure, stay open.

I am not a proponent of mandatory 0200 bar closures, in fact I would vote for no closure at all.
It does, however, seem to be an issue that comes up again and again and if I am not mistaken the 0200 closure happens to be the current rule.
Although rarely enforced, my point was "if it is (someday)", wouldn't the start time simply be shifter to allow X number of hours of partying.
When I was a youngster I would rarely be out in bars before midnight; 0100 was more like it and I typically would head home after 0500.
I happen to live in a country now where the bar closure is much like the Thai rule in most states.
While it took me a bit to get used to it now make no difference one way or the other.

I didn't stay in Tong past 1.30am last night but saw the big brass about in several sois checking in with the bars and owners etc...not sure of the result..did Bangla stay open?

Technically the law is 12 pm in general areas and 1am in special designated nightlife zones.

So enforcing 2am is purely arbitrary not the law anyway.

i'd say its the clientele that would prefer drinking cans of carlsberg and the rest of the shit at home due to a few pennies in the pound, that makes going out drinking in london 100 times better - as those louts are dwindling in numbers! let them stay at home and drink their carbonated crap so the rest of us can have a few comfortable pints of proper beer on a weekend without them cluttering up the place screaming and shouting. i dont think good businesses will fail because of a lower turn out, as the good businesses will still hold strong regardless of these miniscule increases. even if a few of my favourite haunts doubled their price for a pint of samuels smiths i'd still go there
