Does anyone have any experience of the Rawai/Chalong bar scene?

Depends what you want.

If you want a bar right on the waters edge with stunning views, then there is Friendship Beach and Nikitas.

Tamarind 1 in Chalong has cheap booze, excellent food and is real friendly, also by the sea.

Ao Chalong Yacht Club has an excellent location right on the beach. Cheap booze, basic food and no women. The conversation gets pretty boring, but, that's a given when more than two yachties meet up.

If you want women, there are loads of bars in Rawai and Chalong, just don't expect the same quality as Patong.

Things are a lot cheaper and the Thais are a lot friendlier over on this side of the island.

Try the pier road if you want some real lookers. The first bar closest to the circle.... hehehe.

In Rawai there are 2 late night clubs, Laguna, and Icon, where all the bargirls go after their bars close... After 2 am its usually pretty good at these places...

Careful of Icon. That's where the motorcy muggers hang out and will follow you, smack you over the head with a piece of wood and steal all your money.

From the main road on Rawai, turn onto Sai Yuan road. Go past Don's Mall until you get to the three way intersection.
Turn right as if you were going to the view point. Icon is about fifty metres on the left hand side.

Both places are crazy fun. I haven't been in ages as my GF knows exactly what types of places they are. All the BGs go there after work, but also many TGs who just fancy a night out. Meet all sorts. Anyone been to Icon recently? I know they had problems and were regularly being shut down by the MIB.

The Map ref looks like where the Laguna used to be.Harry the owner moved it ages ago and is now next to the SCB bank on the left if you follow the road from Chalong Circle to Rawai beach. About 1 Km back from the beach, The road would be 4024 I guess. The "old Laguna" is still there but is now run by Thai people.

I prefered the Old laguna, the new one is good and full of TG's after 2am, but a bit small. I never felt comfortable in Icon, it is about 1 km from my house but I seldom go there, I don't like the music there either. But opposite are some ok bars, there is one that kind of has a bar shaped like a boat that is easy going and has a short time room out the back. The girls are not the prettiest but in terms of filth factor they are right up there.
