Reflexology tutor qualification

Hello Sunanda,
Logic..No... perhaps Not.... just my two pence worth. Again it should be down to the college and the person becoming the teacher? Who is to say this person would not be a good teacher? I guess people having very little going on in there life if they have to worry about who should be teaching and who shouldnt?

Interesting points you have made. There is a popular idea that a teacher is someone who cannot do. I reply that someone who cannot do becomes a manager, and that's includes crap teachers , lol.

From my own teaching experience, a teacher cannot be made, it's something that is deep down within. The wish/desire to switch the "lights on" in someone and guide them through the process of learning.

There is an old Chinese saying: hard to find a good teacher, even harder to find a good student.

Talking about therapy teachers. I'm more concerned that state-funded colleges are reducing their course choice, than AoR this and VTCT that. Boring !

While I'm my , an example of whether the exam body important or not. When I was doing my AoR many years ago, the tutor was teaching ITEC reflex at another college, with the exactly the same material and techniques. At the end of the day she taught what was needed and got the students through the exam.

That's just a tad patronising IMHO. We're just chatting here on HP which is a discussion forum. The thread starter wanted to know how people would feel about being taught reflexology by a very recently qualified tutor. Personally I would prefer someone with a good lengthy knowledge of the subject, like yourself!
Where's the need to get a grip?

Hi Hallos

Anyone can teach almost anything within our industry without even actually undertaking training in the subject. Buyer beware.

But the Professional Associations have a responsibility to ensure that Instructors within their organisation meet the needs of the students and that minimum standards are set in relation to experience, training and teaching qualifications. I can't think of any other way that Professional Associations can ensure that their Instructors are 'fit for purpose'.

If the discussion had just been about an Instructor, who wasn't inferring that they were AoR accredited, then the posts would have probably been completely different.

It's more than the PA, it's also the exam boards criteria for the teacher, both in terms of teaching qual and experience. AoR/ABC demand 5 years practitioner experience.

I wasnt trying to be patronising.....I guess this post hit a cord with me because.....people views and actions and words can have such an impact on ones outcome? Hasnt the result of this post...now seen this teacher no longer working?
I always try and see the good in each situation:
1)Yes perhaps a few would have not been happy...being taught from a nearly qualified teacher?
2) Who should this be down to... who should decide? a) college b) people c)Awarding bodies?
Well i guess for now this teacher/tutor has been stopped in her tracks....and for what we ask?

I think sometimes we just forget about the important things...Not qualifications,...or x y and z.
We are all Human people......just trying to make there way in life.

Thankyou for your reply. Yes being a teacher to me is a great privilege...and i would only wont to pass on my passion for such subjects that i have learnt over the years in a way that would empower the students......just holding the space in a safe, secure environment so to speak.

Hallos, I feel really offended by your comment and it is patronizing . I do worry about who is teaching because if it is a teacher who does not have enough experience to practice let alone teach the subject what can the students get out of it. What experience can the 'teacher' reach to when she has not got any? What about ethics for the students and expectations that paying students expect a teacher to be experienced and qualified for the job as per professional regulations? How about professional responsibility?

This is not about 'me' ..... this is about the profession or don't you care? If you don't care perhaps you should seriously think whether you should be teaching too.... I can teach in my midwife role but would not dream teaching reflexology to reflexology students until I had gained enough clinical experience to back it up. You cant do this in 3 months post qualifying with only the odd client!

You say teaching is a privilidge.... yes it is, one that is earned..... and this takes TIME!!!

Im sorry you feel my statement may be Patronizing and would appear to have made you mad, this was not my attention. As i said ...I am Not a teacher, however....throughout my learning journey i have Never worried about what or if the teacher is good enough, as i felt i was not in a position to pass judgement.
I understand the need for regulations and standards, but i just feel i could not stand up and make a ripple effect by my actions for something that had nothing to do with me.!!

I have spoken directly to the Association of Reflexologists and they have confirmed that the college in question is not currently an AoR Accredited centre, although it was in the past (this is perhaps why you had seen the school on the AoR website). A representative of The Association of Reflexologists has spoken to the college and they have confirmed that their reflexology course is being taught by Jane Holt a very experienced and well respected AoR Accredited tutor. The college has also confirmed that the person you refer to, has not taught reflexology at their college.

The Association of Reflexologists has said that they are happy to speak to you again about this matter if you need further clarification.

Waywood, thanks for your reply. I know Jane Holt well as she taught me, funnily enough chose her because of her reputation! However the person in question told me directly she was teaching there so there are definitely mixed messages going on... Anyway.... lets move on now....
