Reiki - learn or be attuned first?

Firstly Reiki is not dependant on any form of spirituality what-so-ever. It is completely non-invasive either. If someone truly does not want the energy, it channels to the Earth. Even if a person is in a coma and cannot verbally respond. As for explaining energy work...I have fun trying to explain it too. Here's basically what I say. (trying to explain crystal healing is fun too). This is how I explain crystal healing maybe you can use it to explain reiki too. Medical Doctors measure our electrical system using EKGs, EEGs etc. It is a medical fact that we operate on a form of electricity. When our heart stops, they shock it with electricity, just like jumping a car. We regulate hearts with pacemakers. We are big electrical systems. We have energy all around us. Everything around us vibrates at a certain rate. For example, quartz watches, time is kept by the vibration of the quartz crystal.  We know stones have a field of interaction, for this I use magnets as an example and the magnetic field. When the energy fields overlap, they interact. Reiki helps us pull these overlapping vibrations into the person we are working on to make sure our system is vibrating at the right level.As for chakras... On an intuitive level, we have always known about chakras. Think of all the color associations with emotions, green with envy (heart), yellow belly (coward - sacral) a halo could be interupted as a modification of the gold/white crown chakra. This is just to name a few. Sorry to diverge a little there, but once you start talking energy it is so easy to branch into all the other areas. I hope this helps some. The way you explained that sounds "educated".   I believe that much of what people believe comes from how it is initially explained to them. I don't believe that even medical personnel could look down on that explanation! (Let's face it, they are who we go toe to toe with most of all--and occasionally our hardest sell.) I liked the way you related it to the medical field. I'll probably borrow some of your words today (if it's ok with you)--I have a presentation at the local hospital to speak to the Ladies Auxillary to explain massage and its benefits. I'm almost positive that energy work will come up!  Val

Talenyn, thank you! That really does explain it well. I'd like to hear more, if you're willing to share. How do you explain the 'intent' and channeling the energy from earth to client?

People understand western medicine these days.Feel free to use the descriptions for yourselves. I'm glad they are useful.(confession... I co-facilitate workshops on crystals and crystal healing mostly to Reiki pracitioners. For awhile we were giving workshops to educate the public about Reiki and Gemstone healing)I'll respond about intent and channeling energy from the Earth a little later.
