Songkran

Hi guys(and gals), apologies if this has been asked already but are the bars open or closed during Songkran? My friend is going to be in Patong from 12 April and as it is a religious festival and all the banks,etc will be closed he was concerned that it would be the same for the bars. Would someone please put his mind at rest. Cheers.

The bars are open 1000% the girls are ready to get wet and dirty ,,,,,,,and allways remember to keep a beer mat over yer beer this stops the water and talc finding its way in .......Tell yer mate there aint nothing religous about this day except getting wet and pissed ..... i have found that this day for some reson is usualy one of the hottest days of the year....So ,a good soaking is good thing ,,,,,,Theres nothing better than buying yerself one of them big water guns and blasting a couple of them coppers "Mai bpen Rai"

at Seapearl Seeez yer ull there for a good soaking and don't forget yer beer mats to cover yer beer.........

i think those ppl are just fed up with life in thailand, and live there soooo long they dont even realize they have a homecounty anymore... only read half of the artikle, but these ppl (as far as i read) only think of the hassle it brings with it disturbing daily life and how their business time is beiing damaged.

In my thoughts it's a great party, and sure it changes these days from throwing innocent amounts of water to complete army gear, and some now day hassles like people getting more violated. times are changing, and everything goes along with it, wether u like or not, but i think it's still a great thing to go to as a newbie to see how Thai ppl celebrate their new year, its a bit a culture thing wich maybe gets annoying after lots of times, but cant be missed in thai society

The way it is now celebrated is not "a bit of a culture thing", it has absolutley no resemblence to the way it was originally intented to be celebrated. The young Thais and tourists do go way overboard. After you have participated, either willingly or unwillingly, for numerous years, you too may understand the way others feel about it.

When I was working in Bangkok, it was impossible to even leave the office without becoming an unwilling participant. These are things which, I guess I'll call them longtimers, object to.

The guys I'll be going to Thailand with on the 23rd April have visited Thailand between 12-17 times. They actually make an effort to schedule their holiday outside of the Songjran period. Personally I've never experienced it and when I asked then why the effort to avoid it, they told me it's something they can do without. Getting drenched and covered in flour is funny only the first couple of times, then it becomes a nuisance. Especially over 3 days.

I booked my trip in May and I forgeot Songkran in April. It would be funny to discover ... I guess a lot of tourists plan their trip to be there for Songkran ... I just know that it is very wet, but anymore. If someone can relate Singkran, he's welcome.

I bought a cheap waterproof camera and took some pics, I will scan some pics later and post them. I havent developed the film yet.

Baz was brave enought and had his digital camera with him, so he may also be able to post some pics later.
