Spider Deterrent

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend an essential oil that will work as a spider deterrent. I'm working on a refurbishment project in the middle of nowhere and every spider in the locality seems to think it's a good place to live!

I've tried peppermint oil, but that made no difference at all - I don't want to harm them, and as fast as I put them outside, another one takes up the vacant space lol!!

However, I would like to go to the loo without having to look all around in case something drops on me - yeah, I know I'm a chicken lmao! If I could just stop them living on the windowsill, that would be great!

Any suggestions would be very gratefully received

If you are working on an old house, then the spider population is probably on-line trying to find oils to deter humans! They will have been there for generations, and no amount of 'deterant' is going to move them out!

You could try a fan - electric - when we were doing up our old barn, we had to use one to try and keep cool, and spiderkind kept out of the way. I have learnt to put up with them, (our house was build in 1730) but don't like it when they make me jump by appearing out of nowhere - and I'm pretty sure that some of them are on steroids - they are huge - you can practically hear them walking over the floorboards!!!

you can deter all spiders with conkers. the chestnut wood deters them as its bitter. this was discovered when it was noticed that spiders did not spin webs in chestnut roof timbers. place them in the corners of the room and on window sills. since weve done this weve only had the tiddly ones.

Now you've really got me thinking.

Ants don't like peppermint. Butterflies don't like sage and peppermint.
Mosquitoes don't like citronella, lemongrass and lavender. Moths don't like lavender and camphor and flies don't like basil; but spiders uhmm. Well logic tells me that if you don't want spiders you get rid of what they eat, so you could go for the basil, either in plant form or essential oil.

I'll have to try it myself. However, I have a pretty effective spider catcher in my home - the cat.

Natural spider repellent can be done two ways of both if you prefer. The first is chestnuts, yes chestnuts spiders hate chestnuts and they won't even come near them. So if you place them around your house cottage or shed they will stay away.
Another way to repel spiders is to use lemon pledge. Its not a natural spider repellent but it works. Spiders hate lemons and their taste buds are on the tips of their legs. So by spraying your window and door frames inside and out will keep spiders away.

A Natural Spider Spray Formula for inside the house:
Dr Bronners Peppermint or Lavender Soap, or any other natural soap.
1 ounce of Neem oil
You can also add 1 to 5 drops of any of these Essential Plant Oils (depending on your preference) to 1 quart of water:
Catnip Oil, Citronella Oil, Lavender Oil, Cinnamon Oil, Peppermint Oil, Citrus Oil, Tea Tree Oil, or other essential oils.
Add 5 tablespoons of the soap per quart water. Add one ounce of the Neem oil to the water which you have added the soap and label it. Shake well and spray inside house where spiders are seen. Test for strength. May be done as often as needed. This is not a long term solution but will provide you immediate help. Oils may stain some fabrics or light colored furnishings, test first.

Thank you for your suggestions - over the last few weeks I've tried a selection of oils and I have to say that one particular type of spider up here seems immune to everything - I even put a conker under it's cobweb (that was after putting peppermint oil under the web!) - nothing seems to work.

It was distressing me a lot, because I was scared of the spiders, but also upset because the builders solution was to kill them! I sent Reiki to the whole building and the spiders..... they are still around, but I'm much calmer and can ignore the vast majority of them, or put them outside out of harm's way. The only ones that bother me now are the huge ones that look like they've been on steriods!! But only another two weeks and my project is finished - so I can say bye-bye to them all!! I don't envy the people that will be working here full-time though
