A male friend of mine was groped. He turned around and saw a slightly drunk salaryman in his 40's wearing a big smile and a "I'd like to say hello to you" face. He freaked out and got out the train on the next stop.

It brings up the question of suffering sexual harrassment to a male by other males.

In Manila there are men only cars and women still ride them,,,do they get a feel or two from the guys??? sure,,, but mostly so damn crowded that you are like sardines in a can....nose to nose and toes to toes...with someone in front and back of you....Too tight even for pickpockets.... LOL

I'm not sure what some of you folks (guys and girls) are looking for and how specific is allowed here. You need to know that as junior high and a little older == it really didn't bother us that much. I seem to remember the movies Porky's and Animal House were available and most of us got a kick out of those and couldn't help what it was like. I think the closest I've seen to what we experienced was some Charles Bronson movie that was on one time where a girl was groped on the subway and this Japanese guy watched it. Layer on - he and his family moved to the states and his daughter (maybe 11 or 12) was kidnapped and tuened into prostitution by this Japanese gang member. There is another movie with that guy from Back To The Future in it -- where he watches a similar thing happen and then has memories of Vietnam. Try to remember -- these ages are preferred and if any gentlemen are here from Japan please agree or disagree. I do know how MANY cameras were at our foorball games to be shure..

Most, if not all of the train companies in Tokyo are now in the process of creating women-only cars for rush hour periods. Personally, I hope this solves the problem. Nobody deserves to get assaulted on her (or his, I've seen it happen to two male friends) way to or from work.

not too many years ago - we were stationed there and yes - I am blonde with long hair and blue eyes as were many of my classmates--nuff said??
some of us worked at Disneyland in Tokyo and did very well because we got to play all the parts of the characters that did not require maskes like dance hall girls, snow white, etc. There were also wonderful opportunities for modeling (they liked our cheerleader outfits from Yokota and Yokuska) for the different department stores and we were asked to attend and perform at almost all of the American football games that came into Tokyo at that dome.

Never heard of men being groped but have heard & seen programmes of the growing number of cases where girls get men busted for groping when they haven't even done anything. Just for kicks, and to brag to their friends. Given the social, financial and even legal consequences this can pose, and being a white boy over there when I go, I try to mind my business as best as possible on the trains. They basically never seem to believe men are innocent with the exception of primary school accusors.

Though I concede that you almost can't help it at times, as the article mentioned. I was once sardined in a train with everyone else and in the squashing wound up leg-locking with some office woman in a mini skirt, who's leg was getting noticeably warmer as the train ride progressed. I just kept my hands on the overhead handle and tried not to move.

When I lived in Japan in the late 70s and early 80's this was a common problem. The only difference was women and girls in those days were so shy they were even less likely to scream or comlain. To the internationaly minded Japanese who may be on this board, please don't take this personally, as this is not directed at you, but Japanese men, for the most part, are pigs! I was reading an out of print book from the 1920's that stated: the only people that don't appreciate Japanese women are Japanese men. Little has changed over the years. This is why marriages between American or European men and Japanese women rarely end in divorce. Japanese women appreciate how much better we treat them then their own countrymen.
Having said that, for years jealous Japanese men who can't stomach the sight of a Caucasian (or Black) male with a Japanese woman, have been telling their daughters, sisters, wives, girlfriends, what sex maniacs all foreigners are. So guys, when you ride a crowded train in Japan, be sure to keep your hands visible at all times. If a woman screams, you'll be the first person the crowd looks at.

Female commuters in Japan's packed trains are in the grip of terror thanks to rampant groping that has reached record levels, according to Shukan Taishu.

More than 2,000 train molesters were arrested in Tokyo alone last year, three times the number picked up in 1996.

And their methods of attack are becoming more sophisticated. The atrocious crowded conditions on trains in which thousands of commuters are stuffed into the same carriage is making it almost impossible to devise methods to counter the scourge of the subways.

"Lines prone to groping attacks all share the common feature of having long gaps between stations and numerous express trains that run for some time before they stop. They're lines where women are forced to remain immobile in a carriage for a considerable distance with no means of escape," Masaki Ikegami, an expert in the groping problem, tells Shukan Taishu. "Conditions are ideal for the train gropers."

MPD data shows that the vast majority of train molestations occur during the morning rush periods when it's easier for gropers to approach women, remain obscured and to make a clean getaway. Women are also often hurrying to get to work or school and thus less likely to collar an attacker. Gropers are also using online bulletin boards to exchange information about tasty targets, or even to recruit fellow travelers so they can hunt in packs.

"I've had times when I've been swarmed over and had my panties ripped down my legs during the two minutes it took to get from one station to another. There were several pairs of hands working simultaneously," says a young university student who was attacked by a group of train molesters on an Osaka subway line. "If you're crowded together in a packed train and being felt up, it's hard to know exactly who's doing the feeling."

Groping expert Ikegami adds that molesters have recently started turning away from regular targets.

"The most surprising part of the whole problem is how the victims are getting increasingly younger. Nowadays, it's becoming more common for elementary school pupils to be attacked than high school students because they're usually too terrified to tell anybody what has happened to them," he says. "Even if the perpetrator is caught, they'll usually be given the benefit of the doubt because they can claim the little kids are just making stuff up."

Samu Yamamoto, author of "Chikan no Hyakka (Encyclopedia of Groping)," urges that something be done to combat the railway perverts, even if it looks like women are going to have to help themselves.

"Of course, the biggest problem is the guys out there who are doing the groping, but I'd say there's nowhere else in the world where the trains are as crowded at morning and night as they are here. The crowded conditions virtually encourage gropers. In fact, conditions are so bad, it's fair to say that railway carriages are virtual 'groper incubators,'" Yamamoto says.

Many railway companies have adopted women-only carriages to combat molesters, but the vast majority are reluctant to do so, especially during peak travel periods, for fear of making the already almost unbearable crowding of carriages even worse. Yamamoto says some train riding tactics can help women thwart perverts, including standing with their backs to the train door and facing into the carriage, holding a bag in front of vulnerable targets on the body and letting out screams as soon as they've been touched. Pinching probing digits and stamping on feet have also proved effective counters in the past.

Some young schoolgirls, still the most frequent targets of molesters, have developed what are proving to be a stinging defense against molesters.

"Some of them are putting needles in amongst all the gadgets they have hanging off the straps of their mobile phones," groping specialist Yamamoto tells Shukan Taishu. "I've heard schoolgirls bragging amongst themselves about how many times they've used the needles to jab gropers who've gotten too frisky with them."

This girl has the right idea
