Not wishing to derail the thread from its main topic, but to expand on the TG attitude and awareness of social issues heres my 2 cents and experience as someone in a chair...

On the whole I found the Thais quite welcoming and helpful, BG or not..the odd Thai pi$$ed me off with an unmasked issue towards the chair and myself but not many. Certainly a lot of them did not know how to approach me, even down to asking questions such as name/where from to my mate sitting by me rather than myself. Didnt really bother me as didnt really suprise me. Besides the chair, with my neck/spine problems for some thoughts of mental not just physical problems obviously enter their mind. Others however didnt phase them one bit.

Certainly for the girls who were most unsure the more the girls got to know me the better it became, their initial uncertainty/ignorance/embaressment being removed and once we had talked some, for the girls I exchanged numbers with, a lot ended up calling me and asking if I would go to their bar that night to see them again, one asking me to go to Koh Samui with her. Lots asking me to come to their apartment.

What did I learn? Patience. Longer I spent with Thais the more they opened up and felt easier with me. Lets face it, not many people in wheelchairs around Thailand, Thais dont get to see many disabled people outwith the disabled beggars on the street (I only saw about 6 farrangs in chairs in 8 weeks). Few ever interact with a disabled person, and even fewer get BF by one! The BG grapevine worked wonders for me as girls who had a good time with me their friends were much quicker in getting to know me. Also I learned to be aware of the difference between having a good time with a girl and BF a girl, some girls just wanted to be friends and hang out and not have sex. This became an issue one night as wires got crossed. And yes Face comes into it also, Im not blind to the fact girls are always trying to increase Face infront of their mates, this leads me back to being patient and getting to know the girls and their friends better. The better looking the girl, the more effort I had to put in. Sometimes as everyone experiences at some point, doesnt matter what you do for whatever reason you just cant get on with them.

In short my mission is clear....Im not moving to Thailand for drink, party and girls no: ...but to help improve Thai Public Awareness/Education! :ytounge:

Well being a black american, I have seen and known many facets of racism and have visited LOS. Biggest thing I learned being there was when I first walked into a establishment, I would get certain looks and stares but when I started to speak and they realized that I was american, things tended to ease up(still don't get that part). So that put me in the mindset of anywhere that I happened to go, I ALWAYS spoke up first/with a smile(very important). It always eased the tension on both sides. And as long as you are nice to them, they tend to be pleasing to you.

ive played football my whole life with black guys and just seem to get along well. i think also when someone is comfortable with someone else from another race it just shows through and makes establishing a relationship so much easier
there will always be differences and there will be black guys who have no interest in getting to know white guys and white guys who show no interest in getting to know black guys. just the way the world works. along with every other race
i think this board is good where we have people from so many different parts of the world and alot of people are honest when saying they dont know about someone else's culture or values.

Small addition to my post...there was a couple of nights that I got particularly frustrated with some of the girls...however most of the time it was my problem not theirs...my expectations, understanding and attitude were all wrong and as other threads have mentioned the girls pick up on it...I just didnt relax and go with the flow on some nights. Its not only the girls who needed to learn some things. Takes experience on all sides to understand each other better.

I was one of those *poor ethnic minorities*. But I did it not for the rich and powerful but for the iraqi people themselves. When I was in service I deployed well over 8 times (people tend to forget about the peace keeping missions around the globe) and know what............. I would do it again. If nothing else than to see the looks on the kids faces when we rolled into town ... it was truly priceless. In most countries, the american is seen as very cocky and broods his will on others, but have you ever seen a child from one of the underdeveloped countries when americans go there. It is that *FORCEFUL WILL* that they are hoping comes there. And yes, I have been mean and rude to others but it is the travesty of the situation that motivates me not my thoughts on my government back home. When you walk into a bar the only information they have about is that you are BLACK and an unknown quantity - could be from any number of poor little nations with limited sponsor/marriage potential. As soon as you open your mouth there is new information available - you are now designated as RICH and happen to be black.

Don't get me wrong, TGs are racist - EVERYhuman being is racist, it's a fundamental human trait to mistrust that which is unfamiliar. Many people overcome this by a small (or large) effort of will: to familiarize themselves with other peoples.
