Then you need to a look at human behaviour a little more closely. Hypocrisy is right up there in the list of fundamental human characteristics. Because the world has a bewildering array of facets, we feel the need to generalize in order to try and understand it with our limited intellects. Conflicts arise when our instinctive generalizations ("all foreigners are bad") collide head on with specific cases ("TGs are FIT!"). When we find a specific case that appeals to urges which override our fears, we bend over backwards to construct some borderline rational reason to grant an exception.
