No matter how good capitalism works you will always have cases of extreme poverty. Mostly because people make bad choices in life.

The truth is capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than anything in the history of the world. There is no better system.

It is 'the truth' insofar the World Bank has changed the numerical definition of poverty to a lower daily wage (2 USD/day), allowing them to argue that fewer people live on it than they did in 1980. This is true, but the average global daily CoL far exceeds that (the lowest figure is over 7 USD/day).

The problem that we see with capitalism today is that its been tampered with. Manipulated. We have over regulation and ineffective regulation, most of it due to eco terrorists who think the Earth is burning up.

Every ten years (if we're being generous), capitalism goes into catastrophic failure and every year we're told that we either need austerity, privatization, or changes in regulation. There is far less evidence for capitalism being 'the best available economic system' than there is of anthropogenic global warming, but I don't think anyone who thinks "people living on a toonie a day just need to pull themeselves up by their bootstraps" came to their conclusion by critically examining evidence.

The more government gets involved in the economy, the more catastrophic failures will occur. The best evidence of the success of capitalism is life expectancy. Today in the western world, we are regularly seeing people living well into their 90's. That wasn't the case even 30-40 years ago.
Unfortunately that increased life expectancy is taxing the system because governments are having to pay pensions for much longer than they had projected. Damn you capitalism!!
