I have a few years left before I have to really let go, but I feel those strings loosening every day.
Being that foundation for my daughters is the most compelling desire I can imagine.

Like Lou's situation... my girls are also a few years away.

My youngest is starting high school next week, and that in-and-of-itself is enough angst for me right now TYVM.

I can't imagine what I'll be going through when the leave for college or university! :frown:

It just has hard having a Son. All the worries you have for your girls, I have for my son. I think most parents worry and want to protect them but for them to learn and grow they have to fail or grow on their own.

When they are gone you miss them and when they are back for the summer, you are wondering why University is starting so late.

Don't disagree with you Blissful... We also have a son, and yes the same feelings apply of course, they are just different for a daughter (for the father anyway). Father's tend to be overly protective of daughters whereas, they need to instill the "be a man and provide for your loved ones" values in a son. :???:

the first four years of college they still leans heavily on you. It is the years after that you need to walk backwards and let them stand on their own.

Indeed a fathers do have a more of a protective love for their daughters. A double standard? Yes, but nevertheless true.

Though we'd like to shield them from all harm, we know we must let them go. Daughter or son, there's nothing like watching them grow and become their own person.

I don't think it's only fathers who are more protective of daughters. I have a son, and I tip my hat to all of you who have daughters to protect.

When you have a son, you have to worry about one penis. When you have a daughter, you have to worry about all of them.

Last fall I went from being stay-at-home mom to long-distance mom, and it's been really hard. For me, anyway...the kid seems to be adjusting just fine. :tongue:

My daughter did all of the above about 3 years ago. Thank heaven she stayed in town and is happy.

Think of it like this, it's an excellent and exciting adventure, and she'll have an MA too. If you weren't able to see the world yourself, you can now vicariously see it through her eyes and journeys. There will be different roads travelled; however, you'll always be dad and she'll always be your little girl.

Just think about another convocation, stories of her experiences, landing that career objective, meeting the love of her life, walking down the aisle and becoming GRANDPASMERF one day. There's so much more for you to share!

Well, I can understand why fathers are more protective of their daughters, it's cuz they remember what animals they were (are) and what your daughter is going to put up with.

I don't have any kids (thank god) but for all you fathers I will give you this word of advice which my brother ignored: put your daughter on the pill. No ifs ands or buts. Unless of course you have this backward thinking thing where you don't think she'll be having sex, then she shows up one day 4 months pregnant......

As my baby move forward in life I realize that my ex and I have done well. We may not have agreed on little thing but we did agree on what counts. We become reflective as our children grow and this is good.

My brother fucked up by not putting her on the pill when he had the chance. For the record she didn't live with him but that's no excuse. I gave her mother hell too.

I blame my brother for the "head in the sand" routine, and her mother for being an idiot. Her mother KNEW she was very sexually active (there's a backstory there too long to post here) yet did nothing to protect her or at least advise her accordingly.

Any parent whose daughter is over the age of 13 and isn't on the pill ought to have their ass kicked and HARD. Teen pregnancy is at an astronomical rate and rising every month yet there are parents who just can't see the forest for the trees.

IMO no matter how much you talk to your kids, no matter how readily available condoms are, no matter how careful they are, they're going to fuck around and it is only a matter of time before, in the heat of the moment, the raincoat is left hanging on the hook.

Not saying I know anything about raising kids in the practical sense, but I do have a brain (and use it sometimes). A perfect example is with a buddy of mine. He has 2 daughters, 13 and 15 (at the time). I said "have you spoken to them about birth control"? The 15 yr old yes, the 13 no because he said "she isn't into boys". I said "yeah, ok RIGHT, give your head a shake". No less than 3 weeks later she posts on her fb page that "she's in a relationship" and there's pics of her smooching a guy while sitting on his lap....I pointed this out to him and said "need I remind you of what my niece is going through"? Oh they're not like that. Oh REALLY? and not a year later there's a pic of them sitting around a campfire with 5 boys and they're all drinking beer etc. I said "you forget what YOU were like at 15 dude....."

The only saving grace I have is that my eldest daughter is almost 5' 10" and most boys her age are intimidated by that!

Of course that works in reverse for the older boys... : :grrrrrr: :frown:
