Toilet Seat Up or Down? Does it matter?

One of my cousins and his wife (whom I never met) invited me and the girlfriend over to dinner at their house. We were there about two hours getting along famously. Just before we sat down to eat I went in to take a leak and wash my hands. Before we sat down the wife went in there (honestly I think she was just checking this) and got onto me like I was five years old for leaving the toilet seat up. My cousin immediately jumped up and ran in to take care of the problem so this is obviously an issue with her.

I had no problem with doing things their way in their own house but was not informed ahead time of this and saw no rules posted. Did not like being talked down to by someone half my age over something so trivial (wasn't like I sprayed urine all over the place, I've got great aim).

Girlfriend said "fuck this" and dragged me out the house leaving both of their jaws hanging.

Throughout my lifetime I have been in literally thousands of bathrooms in thousands of homes and have never heard anyone complain or even request this before. I honestly thought this was an old cliche. It seems if you go in and you need to sit down and the seat is up, you put it down. If you need the seat up and it is down, you put it up. Are there people (especially woman) who don't look at a toilet before sitting down and end up wedged into the bowl?

Just curious if this is really a big deal for a lot of people like it is for cuz's wife? ​

This is how I see it.
The man should put the seat down when he's done, and the woman should put the seat up when she's done. Why? Cause odds are it will be the other person using bathroom next. Why should the guy not only put the seat down when he's finished but put the seat up when he needs to use it? And the woman can just walk right in and plop herself down.

Now, yes, it's not that big of deal or effort for the guy to do that but it's the principle of the matter. Why does the man have to respect the procedures of the woman in the bathroom, but the woman doesn't have to respect the procedures of the man?

You should be completely closing the lid before you flush so you dont get covered in fecal matter. If that isnt reason enough, then at least do it as a courtesy for your hosts exposed toothbrush.​

Most men never pay attention to what condition they leave the toilet in. As one female friend pointed out many years ago:

It's not just the fact that you men leave the seat up, it's the fact you don't even notice the urine you splattered all over the edge of the porcelain and on the floor. Would it kill you guys to grab a piece of toilet paper, reach down and clean it off before flushing?

Caused me to change my habits, something I probably should have learned decades earlier as a youngster.

I think that's the real crux of the issue ... don't leave the toilet in an unhygienic state for the next woman to come along and clean up after you.

Then, of course, there's "the slip into the can to pee in the middle of the night without turning on the lights and disturbing your partner" scenario. Not only worse splatter issues, but the inevitable scream as her tush hits the bare porcelain tells you something is wrong.

It is actually possible for a man to pee sitting down without sacrificing his malehood.

Not only that, it can also be relaxing and a great opportunity for quiet reflection

Doesn't matter how well you aim. If you're the one who cleans the bathroom you realize that the splash hits everything surrounding the toilet.

When I'm out I always stand however ( not sure of the cleanliness of other toilet seats and all). But after I always wet some toilet paper or paper towel and clean the bowl, just common courtesy.

I put it down at my place and I live alone!. Hell no I do not seat to pee (Too weird) but I do make sure to take some toilet paper and give the surroundings are a good wipe.​

If I put the toilet paper on the dispenser at all, I don't pay attention so it could go either way. Not knowing which it will be really adds a sense of suspense and adventure to the bathroom activities. ​
