Right-wing media won’t ever mention this but Trump is misleading the MAGA morons about Canadian tariffs on US Dairy. First, the tariff structure is a quota based system that Trump himself signed off on in the USMCA. It acts similar to the luxury tax system in Major League Baseball. Tariffs on US dairy are zero up until an import quota is met. Then those 200% tariffs kick in. Since the USMCA has been signed, the US dairy imports haven’t even reached 50% of that limit. So, there is no tariffs on US dairy. The US has the very same quota tariff system in place on its imports.

However, Canada manages the supply of dairy and the US does not so the US is producing too much for it’s own needs, Americans are drinking less milk, and it is looking to dump its dairy in Canada. This is an American problem they are trying to blame on Canada. Just another dog and pony show.

There is an old adage “the customer is always right”. Canada, Mexico, Europe and the rest of the world are customers of the US. They can go elsewhere for products and services and that is bad for US businesses. But let’s just focus on the US defence industry. You learn this back in high school accounting (business studies). There are Fixed Costs (research and development costs for example) and Variable Costs (the direct cost to make each unit). In pricing, the Fixed Costs have to be spread over the number of units sold. So, the more units you sell, the more the Fixed Costs are spread = the lower the per unit selling price is. So, if the US finds more international clients to but their military equipment, the lower the US military pays for it’s own equipment = they can buy more. But now, other countries are reconsidering buying US weapons and looking to other suppliers of building in house. Which means, the US military will either have to pay a lot more for the same number of planned purchases or will have to buy less equipment (a weaker US military) for the same budget. It would also mean lots of layoffs for the US defence industry.
