I have a short story to add. I have been reluctant to contribute it because I am not quite sure what happened. This was about three months ago. I was on that corner because I had just finished a taco from the one taco vendor on that corner who is one of my favorite street taco vendors in la Zona. (There are two. The one on the left as you are on the sidewalk is the good one. The one of the right is, uh, not-so-good. Think major heartburn.) After finishing the taco, I tried getting a conversation going with the SGs who wear the school clothes. I got a couple of chuckles out of them within about two minutes. Then all of a sudden, a Mexican male, fairly thin and short with short hair (not shaven) walked up to one of the girls and boxed one of her ears and put his hands around her neck. It seemed to me that the hands-around-the-neck gesture was half-threatening and half-for-real. The chica burst into tears instantaneously and the man released her and said something very fast to her and possibly the other chicas. I could not ascertain any of the words in Spanish. He then quickly left in the direction opposite from whence he came. (He had come from across Constitution; he left by turning the corner walking east on Coahuila.)
I was stunned. My first thought was, "What was that all about?" It happened so fast I really did not have time to react. I was going to try to talk to one of the other school girl SGs and ask what happened but then my overriding thought was, "Feets, get moving!" I left in a hurry. Later, I wondered if he was scolding her for talking to me. But she wasn't the only one I was talking to.
There is something amiss with that corner and those SGs. If he is soliciting underage chicas, I hope he is investigated and put out of business by the Mexican authorities.
