that is the problem, whenever I say anything that is true, its always turned round as being derisory.

Of course I want SMA to move forward, and I understand that you are trying to. Im not stupid, I understand how things work, ive been dealing with SMA since you started. I have run a PA for over 10 years, I know how difficult it is. I know that no association is perfect, I am 100% aware of the flaws of everyone, my own included. But facts are facts, if someone books onto a VTCT sports massage course, they get membership, and it wouldnt be until someone like me points out that its a dodgy course, that you would be aware of it, you have practically admitted that.

Are there therapists out there with dodgy qualifications, of course there are....I used to teach on a course in the 90s whose graduates I would not allow to stroke my dog, thats why I set up my own school.

SMA, needs to drop its victim role, the industry is not against you, it is against bad practice, and hopefully, you, me and all those involved, can put a stop to it.

And just on a final note, yes I can look through FHT website, and maybe some of the quals may not be up to scratch, but at least FHT have done something about it....SMA seem to have gone the opposite way, as I said, dropping from 20 days to 65 hours??? I know you say that you wouldnt accept them as members, but how do you know?

As I said before, I am very happy to help in any way I can, you know that I work with GCMT and CNHC, and SRTC, so its not like I dont have an interest in the profession.

SportsMassage I have to say I am a little bit disappointed in your responses. ST has made some good points, but you just seem to have taken the politicians way out....going on the attack and then making a challenge, without actually answering any questions.....it may work in parliament but not on here as its all written down for all to see.

I think so its not all one sided, you should respond to all STs points. Give us something interesting to read on a rainy night!

All my therapies have been with VTCT and a years (apart from IHM 11 weeks) course, took me a while to learn my Reflexology routine, so how are they going to learn Sports Massage !

I can't tell you how disappointed I have been with some of the postings over the last 2 years,and you will see from my postings that I am generally civil in my responses (it has been an effort). However, you must allow me the privilege of retaliation once in a while. I thought I'd answered the questions posed about the SMA's attitude to sub-standard courses. To be honest I really am uncomfortable with the public naming and shaming of schools, but we are aware of the school mentioned and they are in no doubt about our concerns.

I would willingly take on any role involved in policing substandards training providers.
if you remember I brought the Barnes School to your attention over a year ago, along with the discrepencies in the VTCT/SMA tutor qualification/registration issue relating to the 1 day "advanced workshop" which allowed inexperienced SMPs to become tutors on level 3 SMA courses by attending the workshop, is this still the case as the VTCT website remains unchanged.?

When I brought the issue of the conflict of interests of a VTCT qualfications manager running his own school( with substandard training timescales) to the attention of GCMT at the last meeting, SF took it on herself to contact the school personally to seek assurance that things would be improving, something I strongly belive should have come directly from a council communication.

AspireST, I have been campaigning for the last 2 years to name and shame the poor colleges, I have been told that to do so presently would risk legal proceedings , I therefore continue to search the web and map courses to standards, I collate the findings and I still campaign and will continue until I get progress. The potential therapists are the ones who need to be informed of these establishments, then if no one books onto the courses, the training provider will either disappear or evolve to meet the standards.
The SRTC offer a guidance service to any training provider wishing to raise its standards to meet current occupational competency standards. We have to remeber that we simply cant use a big stick approach, it has to be the carrot and stick for the time being. The industry have to demonstrate that the training providers will gain from the discussions we continue to have with the awarding bodies, schools etc

Do you know I don't really disagree with anything posted by yourself or Richard. I'm not sure about the SMA as 'victim' comment---------

I'm happy to take any information on sub-standard providers and we will act upon it. You will be aware that VTCT and indeed ITEC have their own quality controls in place as far as course providers are concerned, and we are trying to reinforce these with our own random checks.

I am glad to see that Richard and yourself recognise the importance of carrot as well as stick----this seems to be a change in your approach which is to be welcomed. If you are to take people with you on this process of change you will find that butting heads is utterly ineffective.

Paul, it seems that people are 'uncomfortable' about the naming and shaming of schools on here, unless that school is active health, and then it doesnt seem to matter I wasnt born yesterday, im fully aware that the post that kicked this off was a deliberate slur on AHG, however, as I mentioned, what a favour it did us, as it highlighted a mistake. Great! Cant say the same about the schools I mentioned. When the great and good from some of the organisations mentioned look me in the face and say "there is no problem with our schools", then it is the time to name and shame. I rest my case.

As for carrot and stick, Nov/Dec 2008 the carrot was well and truly there when I met one of your directors at a private meeting. I have neither the time nor the inclination to butt heads on something that we all want.

As far as I am aware the 6 day sports massage course has not been mapped to CNHC or GCMT, but is accepted by SMA for level 3 membership.

What is CNHC going to do about it? All they can do is refuse registration to any therapist doing these courses.

Thanks for your response ST. FHT happily accepted the above qualification for membership and insurance.

How accurate would you say that the mapping of these courses are. The reason I ask is that I am sure that a lot of these schools who aren't falling into line are probably not very helpful in providing a detailed syllabus of the courses that they run.

For example, my own ST course that I am enrolled on. I have been told many times that it does not meet the national occupational standards that have been set out. I have also been told that without a detailed course syllabus it is not possible to know if it is adequate for CNHC registration.
How can you say on the one hand that it doesnt meet the NOS's and then say that you dont know if good enough for registration???

Are there any training schools out there that other than the Active Health Group and the LSSM who have expressed an interest in the SRTC. Also, you guys obviously have alot on your plate with all of this. How many people now make up the SRTC and financially how viable is it?

thanks for the heads up on the situation, and I will look into this, as I dont even think that course meets VTCTs own standards, let alone anyone elses, as VTCT have entry requirements, which is seems to ignore.

The other course you mentioned has 10 days of practical training with no pre-requisites, this alone means that it doesnt meet standards, so we dont need to see the syllabus. If we had the syllabus we could map it and see where it falls short, and then you could possibly undertake modules elsewhere, but as a stand alone course, no it doesnt meet. By the way, requirement for CNHC is not just NOS, it is the governing body core curriculum.

SRTC works with many schools, and yes, at the moment there are only two schools on there, as the website is work in progress. SRTC, is a virtual council, run by 6 volunteer council members, although if more want to get involved then thats great. Overheads are negligible, so financial viability isnt a problem.
