On another note, I realized today that a domain name we had registered some (a company we are no longer using) is indeed registered in our name, as opposed to "private". I was told that registering it "private" would mean that we would not be able to switch hosting sites, but "public" we could. When we canceled our contract with the service we did not like, they told hubby that we could NOT take the domain names with us. When I checked today, they're registered to US, not to them.

How can I get my domain names back? One was for the old name, which isn't an issue anymore, but the other one, we do want! Any advice there?

The best domain name is a name that says what you do and where you do it. That is the way people search for massage in your area and gives you a better chance of coming up first on the search engines.

Domain Names

This was an interesting post to me because my wife is the LMT and I create websites. One of the most important first steps in actually building a "Good" site is the domain name.

Most of the people I've worked with pick a name "They" think is catchy, or cute and then ask friends and family ( who usually agree ) In reality, you want the opinion of complete & total strangers, after all, they are the ones you want to find your site.

So how do you ask them ? By using Google's free keyword tool you type in some keywords you think may be searched for a lot and write down some of the suggestions Google gives you. This will open up some new ideas & words you may never had thought of.

Another formula when deciding on a name is this: Keep it short ! Think of it this way, if I saw it written on the back of your T-shirt while I was standing behind you in line at a store, could I remember it by the time I got home ?

Long names with hyphens are hard to remember and are easily mis-typed. Not to make anyone mad, but always use dot com not dot net, or dot org, or dot biz Simply put, it's been tested and dot com is better.

To use the name of the town your located in is a good idea for a massage business. We've had calls from across the U.S. both for Gift Certificates and visitor bookings. We even got a call from Australia for a GC for a friend they had in our town.

There is a lot to know when building a "Good" site and your domain name is the starting point. Short, sweet, and simple to remember always works the best.

Ok, so based on "businessnamemassagelocation".com, we should use vibrantlifemassagelewisville.com.

That is available, but still too long.

vibrantlifelewisville.com is available, but leaves out the 'massage'.

vibrantmassagelewisville.com is available, but leaves out part of our name. (well, technically our business name is "Vibrant Life Massage & Bodywork", so all of them leave out PART of the name. In our logo, we use the "massage & bodywork" as a sort of "eforum.xxx line".

massagelewisville.com and massagenorthtexas.com are available.

Sheesh, if it's been JUST me, I'd have gone with a shorter name- but it is technically dh's business, and even once I', "with" him he still wouldn't want too "girley" a name, hence what we've chosen. It works well for us in ALL aspects except the domain name, LOL!
