Sorry, as this is a forum for Phuket/Thai related threads.. but as I am from Indonesia, I am tickled to post this photo of some of the best looking Indonesian women - they're finalists of "Putri Indonesia" (Indonesian Princess, beauty pagean).

I think, Indonesian women look similar to Thais.

One thing you should remember when dealing with Indonesian women: most are moslems and can be very fanatic (narrowminded about their religions). But as other Asian women prefer you to be, be the leader in the relship! You don't have to say yes to anything she demands from you (eg: converting to her religion to be able to wed/sleep with her).

I guess on the scale of all asians, they look more thai than other asians. But a lot of the thai beauty queens don't look typical thai either.

Embarrassed to say I haven't made it to Indonesia yet, but I will. I've been seriously looking at it a couple of times and then the bombs. Is Bali still the best to have some fun? I heard there isn't too much to do or see in Jakarta.

Find it kind of strange when watch asian girls in beauty pagents - in particular SE asian representatives. Most the Thai 'beauty queens' are from hi-so Thai-Chinese families and frankly (sorry) wouldnt even make it in 'Coyotees (Pattaya) Dance/Beauty Competition'!!

Met a few Indon girls - even have one on the Hash - and shes better looking than both of them! (pic above). The one on the left looks a bit LB-ish to me - a country of 220 mil has to have some stunners for sure.

I keep hearing very positive Jakarta reports.. Getting more liberal while the rest of indo gets more strict.. Good club / house music scene growing up.. Of course Block M etc..

Bali is the island vibe but very different in different spots.. Kuta very dirty and over done now.. Legian Seminyak some OK spots.. Sanur and Nusa Dua for non surf type beaches and the later for the uber luxury enclosed resorts stuff.. Ubud for the more mountainous cultural scene.. The north that no one goes too..

Be aware that you will get massive levels of hassle to buy things.. like no simply doesnt cut it.. Mobs chase you around in some places and the hard sell requires a tough head, at times our TG's were nearly in tears..

I am tempted to have a run at Sumatra and the Menatawis, head over to Nias etc..

my first real asian experiences were with Indonesian gals in Bali + Sumatra.....

very shy and very beautiful......but very loving

These of course were buddhist gals not moslem like the javanese.......ask a Balinese what he/she thinks of a javanese.........then stand back.....

I've been traveling to Bali since 89 and seen it change from good to not so good in some areas.
Overall Bali is worth a visit (esp if your a surfer) and yep LIL your right about Kuta (dirty) and some parts of legian is much the same but Seminyak is where all the trendy boutiques and restaurants are.

The problem with Bali is the Javanese, they come over to Bali and arnt nice people so you gotta watch out for them.

Last time I was there was in 2005 and everytime I was in Kuta I would get hassled to buy some drugs, even walking down the street with western children they would still hit you up. This and all the shop keepers hassling you to buy their stuff does wear a bit thin.

I will return one day but at the moment I think Thailand offers so much more

It's nice to see various kinds of responses and comments on the pics I posted and Indonesia.

OK.. about the pics... Indonesia is very heterogenous with hundreds of tribes, and I personally believe, if it'd not been for the Javanese proclaimed the archipelago's independence as a whole from the Dutch, Indonesia would have consisted of many smaller independent countries based on the biggest inhabited islands (Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan/Borneo, Sulawesi/Celebes, Moluccas islands, Papua).

So, actually, the facial features of the people (read: girls/women) are quite various too. The one on the left: a mixture of Javanese and Eastern Indonesia face, and the right: Javanese. And there are also the Chinese-Indonesian, and the mixture of all tribes and other nations.

I was travelling around Indo last year for work (I went to some cities in Sumatra, some in Java, one in Kalimantan, some in Sulawesi) and I have been in Bali couple of years ago.

From my observation: a city in Sulawesi called Manado (North Sulawesi), is beautiful and worth a visit. One outstanding touristic place there is Bunaken, oceanic park (?? Am I correct? I don't know the English word for that). Bunaken is like Australian Great Barrier Reef - Indonesia has one more of that in the Moluccas islands.
The girls in Manado are pretty. The majority is Christian, and I felt much more safer there (considering that I am not a Moslem myself). The food was awesome - rich, and spicy, just how I love it :happyi:

I think, my fellow Indonesians will shot me if they read this, but.. I always think that many of the problems in Indonesia root from Javanese culture mixed with Islam.

They're rough and emotional. Even the women won't hesitant to dig you with a sickle if they feel you has disgraced them.

It amazes me a bit, since Madura island is very close to Java, but its inhabitat is so different to Javanese.

Indonesia is the largest Islamic country right? What % is Muslim? It is interesting that you are pointing out that some of the island are so different and a more safer. If I go exploring, I don't want to get in the middle of someones turf war.

I remember reading there was a big old temple complex on one of the islands. Something like Angkor Wat. Do you know the name?

Manado sounds interesting. Guessing english is spoken on that island?

The 'ordinary' Indonesians, the majority look similar to Thai, believe me . I went to Hatyai once some years back, and I can say that half of people there looked like Indonesians, half looked like Chinese.

I am from Jakarta, and if you don't like: shopping, cheap pirated softwares and movies (80cents-1.5 AUD/disc that may contain 4 movies), don't like the rich nightlife - then Jakarta is not the right place for you..

Go to other parts of Indonesia- probably Jogjakarta, Manado, Lombok island.

Ah yaa... Lombok island, to locals is better than Bali. IT's still very serene and tranquil. I believe, locals have diverted their eyes to Lombok nowadays.

Lombok is the island next to Bali, on its right.

Caution: Lomboknese is composed by Moslem in majority, so you may find it not so flexible as the Balinese.

I have to agree with you eur11, when we were shopping in Bali the Balinese people are just the best natured people I have ever encountered. When walking into a shop/stall it was very esay to pick the Non-Balinese shop keeper they had a whole differant vibe and were very pushy to make the sale.
Where bataring went from being fun to being a conflict IMHO. I am hopeing the Thai people are as much funas the Balinese.

Yes.. The last time I read, Indonesia has (of its total population): 88% Moslems, 5% Protestant, 3% Roman Catholic, 2% Hindu, 1% Buddhist.

Yes, the atmosphere can be very different between islands, as each 'tribe' has its own culture, and added with the different religions, you know what result will come up.

I myself don't want to be 'trapped' in the local civil wars (we have some in Indonesia: Central Sulawesi and Ambon/Moluccas --> Moslems vs Christians).

I think, you may have referred to 'Candi Borobudur'. We were taught in primary school that it's one of the seven wonders of the world. 'Candi Borobudur' is a Buddhist temple, a giant one. It's built during the 'Majapahit' kingdom. Majapahit, is said as the peak of Indonesian glory in the past, probably like what the Roman empire under Julius Caesar means to Italy?

Candi Borobudur is situated in Central Java, near the city of Jogjakarta.

Manado, like 99% of other places in Indonesia, English is not spoken widely. But the good thing is: certainly the people there are friendly, and .. well.. in the city, I believe you can find some who can communicate to you in understandable English
