My suggestion is that it's not good for anyone to be insulting anyone else; far better to just carry on a conversation, realizing that people come here with many different points of view.
Spelling and grammar - it certainly does have an effect on how seriously people take what's being said, but the most important thing is to get the idea across properly. Having the i's dotted and the t's crossed is nice, but not a requirement.
There does seem to be a lot of hostility here, but it mostly seems to be directed at any person or group that doesn't fit in. As long as people go with the flow, and fit in, everything goes smoothly. Or, as long as a newcomer asks for advice, lots of advice is given. It only seems to get nasty when someone has a different opinion than the people who feel like they're experts at this (or so it seems).
Still, some people here have apparently been around Patong for ages, and/or actually live there. To a person visiting for the first time, their advice seems to very good - and it's probably much more accurate than if someone were to simply Google "patong" and read everything that showed up. This discussion item is a good example, with people in this thread explaining that a visitor should treat the local people with respect.
