having lower wage costs and severely higher competition among the bars helps in getting that table service. They do it in China as well, but there it is really pressured, IE you cannot sit at a table if you dont buy a bottle of vodka, whiskey, etc. And for some reason they always want you to mix it with Ice Tea or Pepsi, you have to specifically request coke. (At least in the North East).

All this talk of relaxed drinking environments is making me thirsty, anyone still here in Phuket and feel like a drink

Similar set up in Belize. You ordered a litre of the local rum and six cokes for a fixed price (going back a bit so can't remember, think it was $3 for the 'One Barrel' Rum and $1 for the cokes) - If there was anything left in your bottle (You ordered one each) then the girls would get a felt tip pen, mark the level, you sign it and it gets put behind the bar.
