What level of touching is appropriate?

Not having been to Thailand (but I have been to Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia) how much can you get away with in the bars? I mean the beer bars. My impression is pretty much nothing, maybe a quick grope of the titties.

In beer bars you can get away with a fair amount, but it differs from person to person.
The same level of touching that you would do respectfully in your own country is usually OK.
It is not at all unusual so hold the girl in your arms for example.
More open minded bar girls may even allow a level of touching that even at home is not respectful.

Go slow and you will figure it out.

Outside of the bars it is a different matter, but while in tourist areas holding hands (and more) may be OK.
Outside of tourist areas I would refrain entirely, except where a western style hand shake is appropriate.

Get away with in the "what's allowed" as opposed to "for free." Some bars in Singapore are quite extravagant in "whats allowed" and quite expensive. With the wife and kids, take away options are limited.

My own view is that it is not acceptable to 'grab' a girl in public.

FFS wait till you get to the room and show some regard for the lady.

To get an idea of the shyness and culture regarding public displays, go to the beach, most Thais in the water will be fully covered up. That should give you a hint as to how they view public displays of 'affection.'

You can also watch them greet family members after not seeing them for a very long time. No hugs and kisses, just a wai. Another hint.

it makes me sick seeing people behaving like pigs in open bars, you feel so embarrassed for the girls. sometimes he might get away with it because he's buying so many drinks etc and the others girls wont want to upset him by telling him to behave. although i'm sure it happens (as you noted), and they get a slap.

as others have said if the OP wants to grope about then go to the Gogo's and such places where its a given if a girl is sitting on your lap or whatever. but i think you should respect peoples space, touching anyone without their clear consent is a stupid (and extremely rude) thing to do. and doing it in front of others in a bar is only heightening how inappropriate it is
