This is a question for those of you who have worked for a clinic, centre etc. How much of a percentage would you expect the owners to take from your fee? I'm not sure if it would be different depending on the therapy involved or indeed you experience. In my case it would be reflexology. One place I was interested in were asking for 50%. Any thoughts? Sorry if this has already been a topic.

50% seems a bit steep to me. I don't work from a clinic myself but I know that a local one charges £7 per hour.

I agree 50% is very steep. I work in a physio and they take 35%. I think's that quite average, because I know other places take that too.

Thanks guys. Just as I thought! I'm not going to name names but the person that runs these places is very well known. It's good to know when you're being ripped off. I haven't gone for the job, but if I did I would be telling them my percentage!

We charge £18 for a four hour booking or £7 per hour. I have paid 40%, which I resented, but is kinda acceptable but steep.

The only thing is because I am just starting out I feel I may have to put up with these prices to get my name known and get a good client base, then make my own way ie more from home. Who knows!

Some clinics in Brum charge £ 5.00 per hour which isn't steep BUT they only let their rooms on an a Single day basis (That's 8 hours at £ 5.00 = £ 40.00 per day) [Isn't my maths good?]

A lot depends on the area in which the Clinic is situated. City centre areas charge more than suburbs and well-to-do suburbs charge more than less well-off suburbs.

The way to find out local charges is to phone some local therapy clinics and enquire about treatment costs. You must consider how many treatments you can give in a day - allowing yourself toilet and lunch breaks - and how the costs of your room will affect your usual fee. It might make your charges totally uneconomic to prospective clients if your fees are above the local average.

It also depends what's included. One clinic where I work charge £11 per hour, but I use their towels, music, etc. Whereas the other one charges me £8 per hour, but I have to bring everything in (laundering towels is costly). I also have to do my own publicity for both.

ive been offered a room for one day a week when (and if) i qualify, and they want 50% from me. but im not to sure if this is good or not, as it is a Toni and Guy salon in the middle of Bath city centre and i will use all their towels and equipment plus they are going to do my reception and advertising....????

I think it's down to what feels right for you Yala and Periwinkle. If you feel it's too steep then it's too steep. I'm paying 40% at a salon where I do some reflex and I do feel I get quite a lot for that 40% (staff discount, use of all equipment, reception service, they seek out clients for me etc). However you could be pretty successful doing your own marketing and working from home. I have put two lots of about a dozen leaflets in a health food shop near my home and have had 3 clients from that! Experiment and see what works for you, and above all enjoy it!

I work from two rooms in Stirling and Alloa. They both charged 25% of my fee which I felt was quite good. After a lot of success in Stirling I agreed to pay 50% of the rent and it works out better for us as I save money and the main therapist has my rent money reliably to help her.

One an hourly basis, however I find it difficult to find practice rooms in other areas of Scotland, many people are not willing up here to rent out rooms on an hourly basis.

Thank you everyone. Lots to think about. I'm meeting up with a woman this week for a chat about renting a room in her clinic, £12.50 1/2 day or evening and £25 for a full day, and she is interested in joint advertising. I'll see how it goes, I have to start somewhere after all!!

I think 50% is a bit greedy. However, if they're providing and washing towels, buying the creams, oils etc and you have a ready supply of clients that you don't have to go out and find yourself. It does seem a good way to start off and get the experience.

I have a friend who's a beauty therapist who has to give 50% of her takings which is really steep as she has to buy all the goods and do her own advertising which in turn advertises for the hairdressers she works for.

I work in a hotel and give 30% of what I take. I have to provide all my own stuff and do my own advertising however, as it is a hotel I get clients on speck coming in for a treatment, plus there's a leisure club attached to the hotel. The only thing is I'm relying on the beauty therapists to plug my treatments as their leaflet goes into the hotel rooms whereas mine can't bit unfair but not much I can do about it apart from going and shoving them under the doors all 130 of them.... now there's a thought!!

Periwinkle (if? you qualify!!) WHEN you qualify... 50% of what? If it is 50% of £25 then not great, but Toni and Guy I know charge well over a hundred pounds for a snip and bit of colour so suspect they will charge a lot for the treatment. So, if it is 50% of say £40+ then it's not bad.
