I'm considering using Vistaprint's postcards for our grand opening flyers (yes, I'll have to order lots!). I figure it'll come out better quality than printing my own, with less work on my busy part. Not sure about the price difference (100 for free, up to 1500 for $79.99. We may end up printing our own anyway- that'll be decided shortly.

Anyway, we do need to figure out WHAT TO SAY on them. Obviously have our logo, and we want to have coupons for a free 10-minute chair massage and/or 10% off any service booked in April (we decided to go the whole-month thing as was suggested to me in my recent thread for ideas on what to do for the grand opening).

Should we put our picture on the flyer? Normally I wouldn't, but since we're promoting this as a family business (hubby and myself, and eventually our oldest son), I'm thinking that it might be a nice touch.

What shall we say to make this all-important announcement? These will be distributed to local businesses, and I'm not sure what all else. I'm not wanting to just mail them out- I feel like direct-mail marketing is.... somewhat colder than the image we're wanting to portray.

Oh, and our sign is UP! Looks awesome!

I'm trying to figure this very thing out myself. So far all I have is a rough draft stating that I'll be starting my on-site services on X date, serving an area covering *my local city & county* for $45/hr minimum of 1 hour booking, and outside my area for that plus a small travel fee.

I am trying to come up with something a bit 'snazzier' if you will, so I"ll be watching this thread intently.

thanks for replying, mkat. hopefully some of the "older, wiser, more experienced marketers" will respond soon! :D

FYI, I have spoken with Vistaprint in the past and they will allow you to make multiple orders of the freebies, so that you just pay the s&h. It's a pain to do the extra work, but in the past they said they allowed it. I did this when I was on a shoestring budget and have been a very good customer to VistaPrint since, because of their not giving me a hard time about it. Just saying...

Maybe you can give us some copy and then we all have something to work off of. :)

Sounds like a nice touch to me, but since it will be a flyer, I don't know how nice it will actually look. Will depend on the flyer itself, I'd think.

Again, a little copy to work with would be nice to get us rolling. But, until then, here are some threads that may have some wording you'd be interested in, and a few that just looked like they may help you in your new business! :)

Oh, and our sign is UP! Looks awesome!
Fantabulous!

Thanks- IF we can come up with something good, I may call VP and ask about making a "larger freebie" order. They say you can order up to 10 freebies per order- maybe I can get ten sets of 100 free postcards!

Maybe you can give us some copy and then we all have something to work off of. :)

I'm working on it.

Sounds like a nice touch to me, but since it will be a flyer, I don't know how nice it will actually look. Will depend on the flyer itself, I'd think.

I hear you about "how well will it print?". OTOH, if it's VP's postcards, it should print just fine! The big point we want to make at the moment is that we are a locally-owned business (we literally live right behind the office; we've been in this town since June of last year, so almost a year). We are also a family-owned business. I can't count the number of people who have exclaimed delightedly some version of "Oh! A *family* business!" whenever we've told them that ds and I were also getting our licenses. It really seems to resonate with them that dh, ds, and I are all "on the same page" (for the moment, we'll "forget" that ds hasn't actually gotten his license yet, and that he seems intent on working for us "for a while" but that he will eventually want to go "make his own way". Clients don't need to know that!). So, I want to play up the "local husband and wife working together" bit.

Also, there is no "just massage" place in this immediate area. There are two places I know of that have had an MT working within other businesses (one being right next door at Curves, but she is also an esthetician and I don't know how much actual massage she does. She's told us point blank that she doesn't mind us moving in right next door/see us as a threat), and a "salon spa" has opened in that little house down the street from us- the one we had thought of renting for our own business when we first moved into town. I'm glad we didn't take that space- we have much more room for the same basic amount of money, and far greater visibility where we are now. The salon/spa offers massage too, but as a part of a whole smorgasbord of services, from their sign out front. So, I believe that I'm correct in saying that we are the first/only "massage and just massage" business in the area, and I'd like to capitalize on that without seeming to slander anyone else.

Hubby specializes in therapeutic/pain management, and I will be specializing in pregnancy/post pregnancy/infant massage (all in due course- prenatal certification class is the weekend after our open house at the end of April, and I'll be taking her infant class the next time it's offered as well, if I like her classes.). I plan to become a certified herbalist in time, therein also specializing in women's health issues, and I can see the two (massage and herbs) going hand-in-hand). My "grandest dream" is to eventually find a way to be useful to families who have "special needs" children (such as those served by the horse therapy group we volunteer equine massage for). I'm going to be talking with the director/founder of that program and see if I can pick his brain about that in time. But again, all things in due time. We're starting off with relaxation, therapeutic, and pregnancy (and equine, but we're not marketing to horse owners right now) massage. That should be "enough" to dwell on for now, right?

....

And thanks for the threads to look through, pueppi. I have perused them, and found many great ideas. I especially like the idea of offering a "free 30-minute add-on to any regularly priced 60-minute session", and the idea of making up a coupon book is intriguing to me.... I'm going to play around with that idea for a while and see what comes up. I've also gotten some great seeds planted regarding referral incentives.... again, we'll have to see what develops in the garden of time. My poor husband does not enjoy having to make such decisions. I am coming to rather enjoy the challenge, but it takes so much time and brain-power, and I am somewhat limited at the moment, so I am tending to "freak out" a bit too easily these days.

But we still need to get some initial, "here we are come see us" flyers made up, so we can order them and start handing them out. *** thinking.... thinking.... thinking....***

You definitely have a easier job introducing yourself if there is little competition.
And yes, the family business angle seems like a good one.

Here are my two ideas:

Working too hard? Get a massage!
Come on down to our newly launched family owned practice.
You will get your much needed relaxation with our wonderful massage.
You are in safe hands. We are professionally trained massage therapists.

Free lotion with every massage
Get relaxed with a massage done by a proffesional massage therapist.
If you are one of our 50 first clients,
you get a free WRITE KNOWN BRAND lotion. ($10 worth)
We are a family business so you are guaranteed to get our personal touch.

You should have "NEW!" in a star somewhere. Also include address,
a large phone number and your home page if you have one.
Also if you give a discount, make it a larger one then 10%.
I would advise to consider it a marketing cost. I like writing sums.

GET $25 OFF EVERY MASSAGE!

Very interesting ideas, SchedulingWizard. I woke up this morning with ideas floating around through my head. Now I'm trying to "capture" them onto paper (well, computer screen). I think what's been coming out would more fit into a brochure than onto a postcard-sized flyer, though. And your post has helped me realize that it's better to have a brief, large, exciting, highly visible "short attention grabber" to pass out, to get them into the office; then we can hand them brochures about all these other things, LOL!

I was playing with a "No Foolin'" intro- as this will begin April 1st. I sincerely HOPE that our establishment license will be in-hand by then- they got the paperwork on February 20th! But we all know how government works. I'm calling this morning to check on it.

I haven't talked to hubby about this yet, but I've been considering an idea I read in a thread pueppi posted yesterday, of offering a free 30-minute add-on when they book a 60-minute at full price. That'd be a 30% discount! Once they're in the office, we can hit them with a "rebook package deal". He'd been giving his regulars a 4-session package for $10 per session off.

I told him we're going to stop that (for newcomers) and offer 10% off for the packages (the regulars/established clients we'll keep at the same rate- I can't see raising their rates just because we've moved! He doesn't do too well with math, and $10 off is easier than 10% off, but I'll be there and we'll have software to help too!).

I like the idea of the freebie. We don't do "spa-ish" stuff; he's mostly done therapeutic all this time. The lotion mix he uses that folks go gaga over would cost a fortune to give out- no go on that. BUT, we might make an order for some of the products that folks seem to like (that don't cost so much as this other stuff), and do a giveaway with that. Maybe give them a choice, this-or-that. I'll look into that!

ETA: And I really like that statement of "We are a family business, so you're guaranteed to get our personal touch."

Ok, how about something relating to tax season/the economy?

"Stressed to the max over taxes this year? We have our own tax relief plan: get 30 minutes FREE with your first 60-minute session! That's $30 extra in YOUR pocket!

"We're a new, family owned and operated business located right here in the heart of the area. Yes, we're celebrating our Grand Opening right now, in the middle of these stressful economic times! Let us help ease your stresses with free massage! When you book your first 60-minute session, you'll also get 30 minutes FREE! The first 50 customers who book in the month of April will also receive a FREE ! You will get personalized, specialized attention based on your specific needs- we listen to our clients!

"Come on in, set a spell, and chat with us about the benefits of massage, the package deals we offer, and why you should make massage a regular part of your fitness and health care regimen. You'll be so glad you did!

"(Free time in addition to paid session; cannot be used separately. One free 30-minute add-on per customer.)

But we take it personally anyway- I even have her lovely certificate framed, up on our wall. Hey- we need decor, lol!And from the postcards, nope, none yet. Well, not so. One lady did schedule- with ME (not DH). LOL! Her hubby is one of those who is very.... protective, and he's given her a hard time about DH working on her. So, she booked with me. Since she had a particular issue she needed worked on, we asked if she'd be willing to be a demo model, so DH could teach me how he does it. So she did end up getting what she needed, taken care of, by the member of our staff who is best qualified to handle that particular issue- but she could honestly tell her husband that she came to see me. Works for us! So far, we've gotten about 4 of the postcards back as undeliverable. I've still got the master list, and will mark off those who do call/come in over the next few months. We realize that April may not have been the "best" time to do this! We're going to give it some time, and cull the names we don't hear from after, say, 6 months' time. Sometimes, these things take a while to "gel": DH has an appointment this afternoon with a lady who "found" him last month, after we sent out a letter announcing his move to the place he rented back last August, and moved out of in March of this year! Clients can be so fickle, I tellya!

Well, now that April is over (and therefore our Grand Opening specials), I thought I'd let y'all know that I think we did pretty well for our first month. I'm planning on taking some time this weekend to go over the numbers- it'll be good to see how many folks came and took advaneforum.xxxe of the specials. I know we had a decent influx of new people, and several returns from among them. And one lady simply REFUSED to take her 50% off on her second massage in April. Literally threw the cash at me, winking, lol! She is, to be fair, one of hubby's old regulars, but still. When I can get those numbers run, I'll let y'all know!

Call to action is key
ย

I know i'm late to this, but you've got to have a "call to action" on direct marketing. A coupon on the back is a great idea, something to get people to give you a try. Remember, a 2% response rate is considered good, so it's a numbers game in the end.

Personally, I think it would be ok for a flyer too... but I am a Chatty Cathy!

You mentioned, "wordy text on my site! ".

Do you mean your website? Where will you be using this text?
I will get to it when I know where it will be used.

Websites can have a bit more text then flyers.
But both should be short. Only a brochure should have that amount of text you have written.

I like the text you have written.
But take away at least 50% of the words with "no value".

Compare this:
Stressed to the max over taxes this year? We have our own tax relief plan: get 30 minutes FREE with your first 60-minute session! That's $30 extra in YOUR pocket!

To this:
INSTANT TAX RELIEF
Get 30min free massage (worth $30) with your first 60min session!

Say more, in less words.
Nobody will take the time to read the whole flyer if it's packed with text.

It's a pain to do the extra work, but in the past they said they allowed it. I did this when I was on a shoestring budget and have been a very good customer to VistaPrint since, because of their not giving me a hard time about it. Just saying...Thanks- IF we can come up with something good, I may call VP and ask about making a "larger freebie" order. They say you can order up to 10 freebies per order- maybe I can get ten sets of 100 free postcards!Quote:Maybe you can give us some copy and then we all have something to work off of. I'm working on it.Quote:Sounds like a nice touch to me, but since it will be a flyer, I don't know how nice it will actually look.

But take away at least 50% of the words with "no value".

I imagine it was more of an automatic response; she is probably a member of that Chamber of Commerce and her staff sends those to every new business.

Re: Wording Grand Opening flyers- update
ย

Get back to us with how it worked!

You can maybe upload a picture of your flyer to www.imageshack.us if you want to show us.

I never did get back with y'all on what we did with these- sorry!

I'll attempt to "paint a word picture" for you:

Two per page, front only.

Top: our logo, image with business name beneath.

"Hubby's and My Names,

Our picture (our son took it- hubby's standing beside/behind me, I'm sitting on one of our massage chairs in front of the wall in our reception area)

Therapeutic, Relaxation, Prenatal, Hot Stones, and more!

Hours of Operation:
Tuesday-Friday 10-6; Saturday 9-4

Call to action is key
ย

I know i'm late to this, but you've got to have a "call to action" on direct marketing. A coupon on the back is a great idea, something to get people to give you a try. Remember, a 2% response rate is considered good, so it's a numbers game in the end.

Hey Timedness, did you hear that..... SW says use that for a brochure! *winks* You now have more to play with.

You mentioned, "wordy text on my site! ".

Do you mean your website? Where will you be using this text?
I will get to it when I know where it will be used.

Websites can have a bit more text then flyers.
But both should be short. Only a brochure should have that amount of text you have written.

yep.. website... I'll PM you sometime. :)

Hey Timedness, did you hear that..... SW says use that for a brochure! *winks* You now have more to play with.

Personally, I think it would be ok for a flyer too... but I am a Chatty Cathy! 8)

Call to action is key

I know i'm late to this, but you've got to have a "call to action" on direct marketing. A coupon on the back is a great idea, something to get people to give you a try. Remember, a 2% response rate is considered good, so it's a numbers game in the end.

I never did get back with y'all on what we did with these- sorry!

I'll attempt to "paint a word picture" for you:

Two per page, front only.

Top: our logo, image with business name beneath.

"Hubby's and My Names,
Licensed Massage Therapists"

Our picture (our son took it- hubby's standing beside/behind me, I'm sitting on one of our massage chairs in front of the wall in our reception area)

"Grand opening Specials:
(Good April 1-April 30 2009)

FREE consultation with FREE SAMPLE! (words in green-matches the green in our logo. All other words are in black.)

20-minute Stress-Buster Chair Massage- $10

50% off- buy one massage, get the second for half price.

Types of massages available:
Therapeutic, Relaxation, Prenatal, Hot Stones, and more!

Hours of Operation:
Tuesday-Friday 10-6; Saturday 9-4

Business address
Business phone #
Business web site
(Stop by and register to win a free massage!)"

And there's a black "shadow" border around the whole thing.

It's very simple. We took a "rough draft" around town to show folks we knew, to get their feedback, and this is the culmination of our ideas and their suggestions. I think it looks very "clean". We took a bunch to the local Chamber meeting last Wednesday morning, and hubby gave LOTS away to area business owners, so hopefully.....

And we did have our ribbon cutting with the "larger area" Chamber, also on Wednesday. It was lovely- we had a nice mixture of friends, family (even my Gram came!), and Chamber members there. overall, about 15 people came. Including the owner and two "head honchos" of the school he and I went to! They were *very* excited for us.

Friday, we received in the mail a "certificate of congratulations on our ribbon cutting" from a State Senator. That was "wow- cool!". I have a thank-you note (complete with card and invite to come visit/get a massage) ready to mail tomorrow.

That sounds like some good offers.
Get back to us with how it worked!

You can maybe upload a picture of your flyer to http://www.imageshack.us if you want to show us.

Wording Grand Opening flyers- update

Wording Grand Opening flyers

I am glad to hear that!
I wish you the best of luck in the future, even if you don't seem to need it. :D

Take the cash and run!

Wording Grand Opening flyers

Thank you. We'll take all the prayers and/or best wishes we can get. It's been a long road to get here, and the journey has only just begun!
