Until there is a Speaker then there is no Congress. All the members elected can’t be sworn in until there is a Speaker elected. It’s a Shit Show and it’s all on the Republicans as they have had 2 months to work this. The Democrats keep voting 212 for Jeffries, the Republicans are split 202 for McCarthy and 20 for someone from the far right. 6 votes and the same outcome over and over again. Those 20 really don’t want to vote for McCarthy but if McCarthy concedes anymore to them, then some moderate Republicans in swing districts might just vote for Jeffries to get him to the magic majority of those present number (218) or 12 Republicans don’t show up and Jeffries wins the majority of those present with only 212 votes.

Until there is a Speaker then there is no Congress. All the members elected can’t be sworn in until there is a Speaker elected. The Senate isn’t back in session for another 2 weeks. Laws have to go through all 3 of the House, Senate and President to be passed into law. As of today, there is no functioning US Legislation. But, until the Senate is back in session it will not hold up any law making. The US and the Republicans look really silly right now. Any foreign government trying to say Democracy doesn’t work if going “see, look how screwed up the US is right now”. The government agencies are still running though.

I think, McCarthy will have to step aside and let Steve Scalise take the nomination and be made Speaker. Even if McCarthy were squeak through and be made Speaker then those 20 voting against him could call for a No Confidence vote in the near future and if they get the Democrats on board he could be ousted. If they don’t do that then have 6 Republicans join the Dems and make Jeffries Speaker and move on. This Shit Show needs to end tomorrow though.
