Mob mentality fight in Tiger last night

I did the same things when i first came here on holiday. I did not know anything about Thailand, and i did not care about the money. I was only here for a week anyway and it was the cheapest place i had ever been in..

On the other hand being naive and overpaying spoils the market. And i think Phuket is expensive enough now.

I think the current system is the best one and caters for all styles of payment. Changing it would take away that flexibility.

By running the "bin system"...

1. Anyone who wants to pay each time they get a drink, they can do so.
2. Anyone who wants to pay every 3-5 drinks, they can do so.
3. Anyone who wants to run their tab and pay at the end of the session, they can do so.

By changing this to making people pay after every drink, you then make the people in 2. + 3. do something they probably don't want to.

Why change something that currently works for everyone ?

I notice the majority of guys saying they will pay after every drink have not been to Thailand yet, I'm reckoning that once here they will change their mind on that, it is just more relaxing to pay when leaving. If your worried do as IJ and pay after 3 or 4 drinks, but you will probably find you move on to another bar fairly often so again you are not risking too much most nights.

I have only really seen major problems when guys ring the bell, shout everyone a drink and as they get more drunk ring the bell more and more often, then get a big ol bill at the end and start the arguing and checking of every drink.

I knew a lot. Been reading about Thailand on the Internet for months.

But I think maybe most norwegians are very naive, because you can't find a bad word about Thailand on any norwegian Thailand-pages, and everybody talking about the nice thai-people who's so friendly and you can trust everyone.

And because of that we do (but I have to say that my experience also were that everybody were very nice and friendly).

But I learned a lot in here. What to pay for Tuk-Tuks, etc. So I don't think I've overpaid. But of course: Maybe I got fooled for a drink or two in the bars, and the one time I went from Karon to Patong I paid 300. That's probably to much. The same amount I used to pay from Patong to Kata Noi when I stayed in Patong for my first days.

But I guess you learn a lot from one trip. And next time I won't pay drinks for half the bar I'm in. That made my money fly away a couple of nights, but I got a little bit overwhelmed by the whole scene.

I have no problems with the bin system works fine for me.to the best of my knowledge I havent been overcharged..I would probaly loose more money draggin my wallet out of my pocket every 10 mins than paying all in 1 hit at the end of the night..

Bin system works okay for me, i tend to pay it after ringing the bell or if it starts getting a bit crammed, just so its not going to give me a heartattack later on and i can keep tabs on whats left in my pocket. I usually have a rough idea of what the amount should be.

Only time mine got padded i knew about was in a go-go, and even then it was the eagle-eyed Sishow who noticed the extra beer :embrassed

Also , I'd either end up with a lot of small change in my pocket..........................................or the staff would get a lot of tips !!!!:cheers:

I was very embarrassed one night when I did not have enough money to pay the bill at the end of an evening in Soi Eric, Freedom Bar. I had intended to go to the ATM but got a bit carried away with it all and then when I finally mustered myself at 01:00am none of the machines worked.. they run some kind of ATM update at this time.

I was worried and spoke to the Bar Owner and explained. She said, no problem, pay tomorrow.

The bin system does work for me, but I just keep an eye on it. If I think I have been padded I smile and ask who the drink was for. Then I leave if I care about it. The real problem is me the customer. When I am drunk I buy drinks. Er.. that is it really.

The bin system works fine if you are aware of whats going in and you trust the bar you are in. It falls down if you are far too drunk, or the bar abuses the privillage of the system.

If you are very drunk, or think that you may be, then paying after every-round is probably best if you are on a budget. But of course very few of us can think when drunk. Its when you appear very drunk that the dodgy bars try to stitch you up!
