Great to know someone who'll listen to some reason!
The last guy in your position that consulted and came and met 3 of us expats wouldnt listen to the 'stay 6 month' logic on the premise it may cost up to half a million baht that he couldnt afford.
My logic was he would save at least that by being here in the low season and watching bar prices tumble , plus he would see how lean business is after Songkran till October...
He went ahead anyway and resold 18 months or so later.
Everyone estimates he lost at least 1.5 million baht....

Come here, visit lots of bars sober , and keep your ear to the ground.....the bar game is full of tricky stuff...

I have a friend who makes over 300k profit per month from his bar, I'll tell him to set fire to it, as I've been told on a forum of all ex-bar owners that you can make more money that way??????55555 crikey I know scores of people who make a profit from their beer bar, make adequate income to live here, why do you guys all trot out the same forum crap every time some one wants to have a try? OP get some experience of Thailand then have a go.

Best advice on here so far, is come over and stay on the cheap and look at the different business opportunities before jumping straight in. Ask local business owners the inside information on how to run a business, what you need and how to get it. Cost of living for 6 months will be 300 to 500k, but will be a good investment, a early grabbed at, wrong decision, can cost you a lot more. Try and stay in a related field of business to that which you at least have some knowledge of.

There's no doubt you can make good money with bars here. No one is saying you can't. The OP, however, displayed a level of understanding of even basic business sense equal to that of someone who's never ran a business before, thus the warranted responses above.

If done right, a bar can be a great business venture, however, it can be disastrous as you already know I'm sure if one is not wise about their decisions. The OP needs to do much more research into this subject before making the jump.

Would be interesting to guess at how many bars make money.. And by that I mean a return on investment not just covering rent and owners beers..

I would guess 50 % out and out lose. Not only due to the business but lifestyle ( owner breaks up with missus, bar fails.. Owner becomes a drunk.. Owner has a bike wreck or needs to leave.. Etc etc etc)...

Then of the next 50% let's say half only break even.. Meaning make the investment in key money back.. But that's consumed at the same time as owners salary /lifestyle.. Hence no money left for next round..

Of the last 25% (and that might even be high IMO) of bars which actually make income enough to cover key money, and the owner doesn't flame out.. How many make enough to justify the hours and lifestyle ?? I would say perhaps single digit % in the patong beer bar arena ??

There's some bars making great money.. Bangla fronted bars, well run, by experienced owners can pull in big numbers.. But those are few and far between when you count up all those that try.. I would be far more keen to try a lower investment bigger fish in a smaller pond market (samui / chiang Mai / etc) operation than compete in a market where so many are losing money to run a dream business..

Probably the same as anywhere else in the world, if you like a drink yourself it kind of spells trouble, if you can run it as a business, i.e. you go to work and not out on the sauce, or are able to let someone else run it for you, you stand a better chance of succeeding, you'd need to be strong in Patong to be able to do that though.

Must get boring if you do "Go to work" but can't do anything in the bar every night other than drink without being a target for the MIB, if you even change a CD.

it seems that the more successful bars involve the owner being there and drinking with customers though.
it`s really not the same talking to the thai staff if you are regular somewhere and have a group of other drinkers to interact with.

have seen bars go downhill quickly when the owner is over it and doesn`t turn up,many times in patong!

i see so many businesses come and go in Vancouver, where i live
1 huge bar/restaurant must have lasted less than a year and they built it from the ground up and must have costs millions
i would love to know the story behind that one
and see many small stores come and go

i would be a bit more comfortable starting a business in my home
but ti start one in Thailand, where the outlay isn't as much, i might be more apt to take a little more risk/expenditure that might pay off

I hear you Loop, but I'm sure you see my point, being there every night dishing out free drinks and making friends with guys there for 2 weeks, stirring porridge, can't be good for business, but all depends on how many you get in, if you're full every night then that's cool, but if you're not, then you need to be careful....

The Guy who is there every night and is fairly sensible will for sure be a Bar Owner for longer!
