To me, dizbuster seems to make more sense than most people posting here, probably me included. I assume most people here go to Patong for a vacation and it's usually good enough that they want to come back over and over again. Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe I'm overly cautious, but I've never experienced most of these problems, nor have any of my friends - at least they never told me about it, or complained.
As to touts and lots of other things, it all probably comes down to money at the end of the day, or week, or whatever. If the touts are making the owners more money, they'll want these guys working "for" them. As for the touts, if they're not making money off it, they wouldn't be doing it. Someone said that the businesses wouldn't remove them - "Easy to do but won't happen. The extra trade they bring the owners is too much for them to give up." If that's true, then it's not going to stop even if every one of those owners read what you guys are posting. The only question that matters is whether they're making more or less money.
To the people commenting on tuk-tuk drivers demanding more money when they get to a steep hill, I think you all agreed that this isn't common practice for everyone, but location based. Why not bring it up when you first hire the tuk-tuk - tell them right then where you want to go, and that it is up a very steep hill, and have them agree to the price BEFORE you drive off in the tuk-tuk? Maybe they'll raise the price right then, and then it's up to you to decide if the hill justifies a higher cost. Suggested wording - "big hill", using your hand to point way up.... then saying "no problem, 300 baht?" or whatever the agreed on price is. Just pre-empt the problem.
As to bars, is it impolite to ask to see a drink menu before ordering anything? Regardless of whether someone beat you into the bar and pretended to have brought you there, if you are shown a menu with the drinks at 100 baht, or whatever, when the drinks arrive at your table, so does the bill. If it doesn't match the menu, say something right then. Or simply ask "how much beer?" or whatever?
