Regular price for drinks

Thaicam...where in Asia is it you are that drinking booze is looked down by the 'better' people.?

Im not having a go just interested to find out where.

If been reading up quite a bit on touts tonight and 400 - 600 Bath beer. And I read the advice to always ask the price before you order. I got that! But what I did not find was information on how much I should pay for a beer, a coke, a juice in
a) a beer bar
b) a gogo
c) a disco
If I don't know the regular/recommended price I will never know if I'm being ripped off.
So if anyone here could quote me standard prices, it will make my life much easier when I arrive in Patong in 3 weeks (can't wait!!). Thanks a lot.

80-200 depending on venue. You can find places cheaper and more expensive than this, but this is the range for most venues.

Don't make the rookie mistake I did and not check as 5 beer bars in a soi that are right next to each other will have vastly different prices. Better to check before ordering.

I could write this myself, but Faulty would find some way to get it to mean the opposite of what I tried to say. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with any of this, just posting it as an example that while Faulty feel comfortable with considering guys drinking on the street as low-class, others find drinking anywhere to be low-class. Anyway, on to your question:

One answer: India.

Drinking (and bars) are VERY much frowned upon by many (most?) of the better people there. I could find you any number of examples, but here's just one website for you to look at, giving you a feel for what's going on:

All of the Indians i know (Sikh) in Delhi love to have a drink. Drinking scotch whiskey for example in India is a pleasure reserved for those with money (and with that comes status), as most have none. no one would be looking down on any of my friends there and they all drink, and they're all Indian. Nobody cares

maybe you're hanging out in the backstreets of some backpackers village where they're all vegetarian Hindu's who earn less than a dollar a day

the most expensive beer bars in patong are on soi tiger IMO

dont be surprised to pay 110bt for a bottle of Tiger, we got 4 Tigers and 4 sambuca and it was over 1000 bt but a walk 5 mins away at Zaza bar on rat-u-thit rd the same round was less than 600

ofcorse bangla prices are higher but 500bt per round difference soon adds up

I'm sure you're well aware already anyway but dont forget to keep ur eye on ur bin aswell, every so often check what the little slips of paper say on them so ya know ur bein charged for what ur drinkin.

If they see that ur on the ball & regularly check what's on them theres less chance they will try rip u off

Hey, I'd bet that you enjoy drinking, so it's quite likely that your friends also feel the same way. No surprise there.

"hanging out in the backstreets of some backpackers village..." Chances are that in places like that, most people LOVE to drink, and line up several deep at any of the (government run) "Wine Shops". They may well earn less than a dollar a day, but that won't stop them from getting their booze.

As to "nobody cares", I doubt you know very much about India, as in most things, India is just the opposite.

It doesn't really matter. There are more than enough web sites to give you an idea of the general "feel" about drinking in India, and you can come to whatever conclusions you want. I doubt drinking will be banned, but it gets more restricted all the time. Closing time for all the "Wine Shops" recently changed from 11pm to 10pm.

Maybe I'll take a photo of a typical "Wine Shop" and you can judge for yourself what it's like. (...and yes, the "Tourist Hotels" serve drinks that the tourists expect, at a price that mostly only tourists will spend...)

Of course, none of this has anything to do with the topic of this discussion, but is only in response to Faulty. All I was trying to say up above, was that at prices like 600 baht for a beer, it's no wonder that no locals would go there. ...and at prices like that, neither would I, vacation or no vacation.
