People will do whatever they enjoy doing, despite how others may feel. To you, sitting in a bar, drinking on the street (or on the beach?) is a "lower" thing to do. To people back home, just going to a bar is a "lower" thing to do.

As to a "meeting place designed for drinking", that definition leaves out the "business" part of any commercial enterprise, be it a bar or a bus. Services are provided, for a fee. Dupree's answer is (in my opinion) the best answer, and I think he's 100% correct!

Gosh, you really need to read what I wrote, rather than what you think I meant, as you always get things mixed up. I know it's difficult to keep track of all the comments in all the discussions, but once again you're talking to yourself, not to me.

Let's put it a different way, to make it even more obvious. Where I am right now (Asia, but not Thailand), drinking booze of any kind is looked down on by the "better" people. The simple fact that someone is drinking booze is already a negative to these people, regardless of where the drinking is being done. I don't agree with them; I am just telling you how they feel.

Back home, many of the people I know frown on going to bars in the first place. To them, going to a bar for drinks is already a "lower" thing to do, and going there to pick up girls is even worse. I don't agree with them either, but that's how they feel.

So, to them, what you're doing by going to a bar to get booze and girls is beneath THEIR standards, and to you, someone doing the same thing you do, but out on the street, is beneath YOUR standards.

Not sure why we're even discussing that - this topic was about the crazy prices some places charge for drinks, and I said "no wonder the local people go elsewhere". Read the prices noted in the original entry of this topic.

There certainly are places that are not rip-off joints - if you guys are really telling it like it is, MTB sounds like a great place to go for whatever... and a place where you'll be treated fairly. If I did go to bars, that's probably where I'd go. As to any place that charges 600 baht for a 35 baht beer.... to me, that's highway robbery, unless you've got a really good reason to go there which is not to simply get a drink!

Twice in the past few days, YOU are the one who has gotten things completely "wrong", but you seem to be blind to it. You invent meanings for the words you read which have nothing to do with what a person posted or meant.

Regarding the "how far does the US dollar go in Thailand" question, despite the fact that it says right on my post that I was asking for a rate that people felt was good, you post that I'm stating that the number is "7 times".

While you don't post a lot of confusing cr*p to justify your mistakes, neither do you accept the fact that you were wrong.


(As to what I said other people felt about those who go to bars, it's THEIR opinion, not mine, and I see no need or reason to dispute it with them. It may or may not be "bollocks", but it's an accurate description of what those people feel when talking to each other. Whether you or I agree with it is just as irrelevant as what you think about me enjoying my beer on the beach, which is where I usually go to relax...)

As to life-style, I prefer spending $$$ on things that I want, and not stupidly throwing it away because that's what others choose to do. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with those people I know of who DO fit perfectly into your definition. If they enjoy it, good for them! The people who I really feel sorry for, are those who are spending money on things they don't really want, and spending time with people they don't really want to be with, because they think "that's the thing to do". You only get one shot at life, so why not do the things YOU enjoy, and spend time with the people you want to be with?

That's exactly what I *do* like to do, and as I recall, Rawaii Beach was absolutely beautiful! I went with a friend last time - he rented a car for ten days, and we went all over Phuket, with him helping people and me taking photos that he later posted on his website. Maybe one of these trips I'll spend a week there rather than where I usually go.

My memories (probably enhanced over time) are that everything was green and beautiful, the beaches were fantastic (for photography), the beer was ice cold and the people were super-friendly. It was quiet, no loud music blasting away at your ears... it reminded me of that movie "The Beach" in some ways.

I've still got the photos I took; I should post some of them. Thanks for bringing back some really nice memories.......
