Just a warning story... or perhaps another stupid newbie thread for you old hands to laugh at

Stopped in at Liza's bar a few nights ago, last bar on the left at the end of Soi Gonzo (the soi with the Aussie bar on the corner). Mostly very average girls, but one young girl 'Am/Emma' caught my eye. Told me she was a student, 19, only there for a few weeks before university etc, same same as you always hear, although she was pretty crap at the bar games which made me believe her a bit more than usual.

Spent the night and a whole lot of money there, buying everyone drinks on a quiet night, had a good laugh (until I saw the bill) and left alone, no worries.

Went back last night, Am jumps on me straight away, touchy-feeley, thai kisses all over etc. Bought a few drinks for everyone, all playing games on my iPhone, all fun again. After a couple of hours I asked if I she'd like to go eat, payed a 500b barfine for her and a friend to leave and got some food, even bought some food to send back to the bar with the other girl.

Then we get back on Banglar and they both start heading back towards the bar. I asked if she wanted to come back to my hotel instead, she starts going on about how 'she not go me, she not same she, she' pointing to the other girls on the street. I asked her why she's been acting the same all night then, giggles but still heads for the bar. So I went back to the bar and spoke to the boss, (who's just tucking into the food I bought!) told them I wanted my 500b back, they said no, she already told me she just go eat, my problem.

Well I wasn't going to start kicking up a fuss alone at the end of a dark and quiet soi, so cut my losses and just headed off alone again

Don't know what lesson to take from this really, I guess make sure you work out exactly what you are paying for first and never assume that what's been taken as 'unspoken agreement' before is the same in each case, or that paying a barfine means what you think it normally means.

I'd personally also advise you avoid Liza's bar in general, or at least check your bill carefully, as the bills I paid there have been some of the biggest I've paid for a night out in Thailand, but that could have just been me getting carried away and buying everyone drinks. Oh well, you live 'n' learn...

I can see the bar keepers point. If you had stayed to enjoy his girl's company in the bar, buying drinks for her and yourself, he would have made money from you. That's why the BGs are there. Some guys have ended up spending a lot more than 500 baht in bars for the same result.

Of course, no bar is going to refund the cost of drinks brought for one of their BGs if she ends up declining their invitation to go with them to their hotel room.

I can understand your iritation but just put it down as a learning experience.

Hmm, reading the thread there is definitely a sense of entitlement in some of the posts. Sure, almost all the girls who work in the bars are fine with p4p. But without actually discussing it, you can't count on it. Yes, being flirty and physically affectionate at the bar in exchange for ladydrinks is part of their job, and you'll almost certainly get that, but just because you BF a girl to take her out to dinner, or out dancing, or whatnot, doesn't mean you've got a definite claim, even if she was snuggling with you, telling you how wonderful you are and begging you to buy drinks for her and all her friends.

Until you actually discuss if she is coming back to your hotel room for sex, and she says yes, you can't count on it happening (and even if you do make an arrangement, if you act like an ass after leaving her bar, don't be surprised if the girl decides she's not going anywhere with somebody who scares her).

I've got friends who work in the bars who don't like to get barfined because they don't want to go back to a hotel with somebody. They are ok with going out dancing, or bar hopping, but they don't want to sleep with soembody for money if they can avoid it, they make their living from their commission on the ladydrinks and their salary for bartending/waitstaffing the bar, while they wait, hoping that Prince Charming Farang will come and take them away. I'd say it was a forlorn hope except for the people that they and I know independently that have met somebody awesome and are now married and living in europe or america.

TLDR: Without at least a verbal agreement, expectations are in your own mind.

I'd be the first person to agree with you if someone were trying to scam you, but by your own words, you got everything you had asked for. Maybe that particular girl did NOT want to go with you for whatever reason - but you never even brought the subject up until the last moment. You made lots of assumptions, and assumptions often go wrong.

You spent money at the bar like there was no end in sight, then on the second day you bar fined two girls to go to dinner with you, one of whom you sent back to the bar with food, and the other you just "assumed" would go with you back to your hotel. One of the first things I remember reading in this forum a long time ago, was to work out all the details BEFORE YOU BAR FINE SOMEONE to avoid any unpleasant surprises.






I don't spend much time in bars, but I thought that advice was pretty good as general advice about anything in Thailand - always agree to the price and service before starting something that will cost you $$$$.

yeah, you may be right though, perhaps it would be better in the newbies area or re-titled, but it did feel to me like the whole deal was a lot more obtuse than it has ever been in any other bar, and then after a whole night of buying drinks for all the staff all I got was a 'your problem' when I raised the issue.

Perhaps remove the bar names and leave it as a warning story for others?...I'll leave it up to the mods to decide.

TBH, my last two tours of Patong, I did change my style a bit, as it was just getting irritating, so many girls that didn't really seem too interested. So I would buy a drink, if it seemed to be going OK, have a 2nd, then merely say I was leaving, and see if they asked to go with me. Since both times I spent over a month with the a girl I met on the first night or soon afterwards, I actually spent very little time looking for girls.
I still never ask their price. If they want more than the going rate, then they generally let you know. Never been a problem.
This is where we differ. I like to find a girl I like and spend a month or two or more with her. If things had worked out better last tour, I would have spent all 5 months with the same one, and probably gone back to her again. On several occasions, I have hooked up with a girl, who I was only very minimally attracted to, and each time they came on to me, would probably never have picked them out, but they were nice girls, and I spent over a month with each of them. It is easy to get attached, hard to break free again, not just because they are clinging, but because I genuinely liked them. So, it just makes for hard decisions, feeling bad about ending it, but finally having to do so, because in my gut, I felt that it would not last, and the longer it went on, the worse the split would be.

The last two I was with, for 2+ months each, I was very attracted to both of them. In the end, they dumped me, which, at the time hurts, but I'm a big boy and I can take it, and it is actually a lot easier, since I don't have any conflicted feelings, and get over it, as there are plenty of fish in the sea!

The point being that, in the clutches of a certain type of girl, "only one night" could possibly turn into a lifetime.
I learned a long time ago, that if you don't find one you like, then just call it a night, there is always tomorrow. In fact, it is quite a good thing to take a night or a few of them off, occasionally. Never any reason to be desparate in LOS. Better not to be too picky, but if that is really how you are, then you are just stuck with yourself, aren't you? 5555....
Likewise! Each guy has got to figure it out for himself. One guy might read what you say, and because he is more like you, he will get something from your posts, and learn a bit to help himself. Another guy may be a bit more like me, and get an idea from a post of mine. Most guys will probably just try one way, then another, until they figure out their own way.

nope, I just happen to be friends with folks who run a bar and a number of the women who work there. Not every one of them is happy about doing p4p even if they do it. Yes, I've got other (ex-BG) friends who thinks those girls are crazy and should be getting every Bhat they can while they work since who knows what will happen.

I would suggest that the BG would have had a Plan B.. ie another customer somehere .. later in the night. Seems very odd that she would knock back a LT especially in a quiet Soi.
