Bangla Road?

Can anyone suggest why Bangla Road is called 'Bangla'........ermmmm Road.

I know it has a road bit.....But.........Can't find any reference to the term 'Bangla' in Thailands recent or ancient past.

Just flicking through the channels on the telly here and have around 15 channels that start with Bangla....Bangla Agnipariksha, Bangla TV, Bangla Star Jashna TV, Zee 2 Bangla etc and......

Needless to say, none of them feature ladies pulling blokes into bars with a view to plying them with drinks to get them into bed or a bunch of Antipodeans being sick on the carpets covering the drains.

Bangla is the official language of Bangladesh hence the Bangla bit....All the Urdu channels start with Urdu this that and the other, I can't understand any of those either.

Too easy to say all the tailors! As there aren't that many actually on the 'Bangla' and most I've met have come from Manchester and actually knew Bobby Charlton and Nobbly Steelies when I tell them I am from there.

Just a thought! You know me. Was it called something before it became the 'Bangla'?.....Maybe just......Road!

Maybe it was just 'road' and the scousers were first to colonise it; going down 'that there road' for a 'bang, lar..'

Well theres Bang-Kok and Bang-la so I have to think there is some connection. BANG is the the central Thai name for towns or villages situated on the bank of a river. (make sense for Bangkok right)

Yea I know...no river in Patong, but maybe in the old days the water flowed (river) down that direction towards the bay. Maybe it still there but under the road washing away the nightly sins..555.

The road was invaded by bangladeshi people quite some time ago to sell their wares. As you see still see lots of Bangla and Pakistani people around doing just that.
Hmmm... it's only a wild guess. I'm not sure if I'm correct but I think that the link must be found in that direction.

Apparently, the other name for Bangladesh is Bangla! From what my internet based friend is all about.

But I can remember the word being used a lot when growing up as a type of party.

Then I am rather thick.

Bangla is an Indian word. There has been a lot of influence of Indian culture over Thailand. For instance Ayuttaya is named after the Indian city of Ayodyha; Asok is named after an Indian king and warrior Ashoke. Loads of other examples, I suppose Bangla must be one of them.

I'd be interested to hear what Dogblower has to say, he is a mine of trivia.

My guess its to do with the 'banks of' theory.. Like Baeng sean etc.. As Sai nam Yen used to come down that way, and its shore based location..

I would also go with that theory. Bang, pronounced similar to "bung," or "baang," not "baeng"(which means something completely different), means a district by a waterway. There may have been a creek or canal there at one time. One meaning of "la" is little or minor, so it could have been a very small creek, which was easily diverted.

On the other hand, Bangladesh used to be Indian, and the name of Bangladesh is said to come from an Indian monarch, named Vanga, who was said to have first colonized Bengal approx 2,000 years ago. There were two ancient principalities in Bangladesh named after him, Vanga, and Vangla. So with the Thai-Indian connection, that is another possibility.

How about Bang being the southern word for Pee and La being the persons name?? ie La owned the road originally? well thats what my oracle reckons.

I thought I had heard it was a referance to beer soi but everyone tells me I'm wrong, no idea why I thought that but Dinks was of the same impression.

not at all certain but many places 'Bang......' (rather than 'Baan....') and heard it referred to as meaning village or settlement especially one near water?

Bangla is the language of Bangladesh and what Bangladeshis speak .....originally part of India then 1947 East Pakistan until it became Bangladesh in the 70's....Neighbours of Thailand,Bay of Bengal hence Bangla....desh. Lots of Asian/Indian influences and after watching Rick Stein its obvious they got cooking/spices etc from that part of the world....I may be way off but thats my knowledge of Bangla....not to be confused with "Bangra" a Asian dance as others have posted. Someone must know the real reason why its called Bangla....never seen any Bangladeshis in Patong those guys are very poor and would not be able to afford the place having seen Dacca and Shylet....Indians yes but not Bangladeshis.

Big connection between the two areas Buddah was Indian...Buddhism originated in the Indus basin which is now Pakistan and a lot of Hindu beliefs are part of Thai beliefs not so knowledgable on that but seen many Hindu gods in Thailand and also obviously the food is connected chillies and certain spices.

Things like this does for some reason interest me. How far back in time can the name be traced? As I have no clue whatsoever when it got it's name, does anyone still live that have some sort of memory of it being called something else?

If it is possible to somehow date the name it would probably be easier pinpoint the most probable reason behind it. Old maps perhaps? I'll do a search on it just for fun.
