Bars operating on a knife-edge

Bad for bar owners, however, I can not cry for them, I think they made some good money. Very bad for the girls, even if bars close they are still all there and need money. The girl I f**ked about 10 days ago, before going to Koh Lanta, told me, she will go back to Chang Mai....she is from Chang Rai and her family send her as child to Chang Mai and later Patong. Chaps, it is a byuer`s market now everywhere, however be serious and be gentleman, and do not ask for 500 Bt for a night...I was in Koh Lanta for diving, there some dive shops will die soon, now I stay around Krabi, Ao Nang, bgsusiness low as well in each respect. The problem is that the locals here just set on increase never on seforum.xxxnation or recession. And people were stupid enough to open the 99th massage salon or 25th dive center or 55th bar...

Naw, it's just that people need to separate "friends" from "business". If you're with your friends, you're probably having a good time regardless of whether your beer came from a bar, a 7/11, or the street vendors. You can be drinking on a bar stool, or at the water's edge. Different people have different preferences.

On the other hand, if you're there to pick up someone to spend the night with, it's "business" even if you don't want to call it that. You're "buying", and the other is "selling". Of course, a whole lot of people refuse to see it that way, which is why we get to read all the horror stories of people who were taken advaneforum.xxxe of.



Dodger's right - for a bar owner (or any business owner) right now seems to be very hard times, and what I said up above is not at all what they'd want to read here. Patong is a contradiction. I read in one place where Patong is building so fast that you wonder how things can keep up, and then when the economy makes one of its downturns, a lot of those same business people are hurting. It's certainly not just the bars.

As to vacations and holidays and what-not, people usually go off to do what they enjoy doing, and do it for their own pleasure, not for the approval of an outside audience.

As to the drunks sitting on the park benches with their bottle of whatever, you can be just as drunk, and make just a big fool of yourself whether sitting on a park bench or a bar stool.

Anyway, if Patong had 1/3 as many bars as it now has, those bars would probably be doing much more business, and wouldn't be as likely to be operating on a "knife-edge".

I think most people could see this coming, with all the world problems and also the airport issues adding to everything. I guess this will be a bad High Season for some. I feel for all the people who have business out there, beucase they are the ones who are really going to be hit, not really us holiday makers.

:intello: From everything being said here, and I think LIL has a pretty good take on things; from his earlier post on this thread, the scene in PHK is still very dependent on the 'single' male tourist

As for all the family destination hype the government has geared toward selling to the world over the last few years, yes it is a good alternative advertising campaign but as already commented upon within this thread - they are a different kind of tourist and a different kind of financial income for PHK/Thailand.

If Thailand wants every piece of the cake, which they no doubt do!!! it may prove more beneficial to sell to the markets they have and sell the assets they each provide, not sell everything to all people in the vain and naieve concept their marketing campaign will work!

I.E..
PHK, Patong - pretty obvious
Samui - the most famous Full Moon party destination in the world
Bangkok - Shopping, shows, business
Chiang Mai - History, culture, art

etc.. etc.. you get my point

It IS still amazing how some bar owners conduct their businesses. Just the other day, me and a friend was invited to this farang-owned bar (in Soi Eric, BTW, but not the MTB of course) with whom my friend does business.

After waiting for him for about an hour and a half, he eventually showed up. At one point he (i.e. the bar owner) offered to treat me and my friend with a drink. We both opted for the Sang Som and soda. Then, amazingly enough, the bar-owner suggested that since he had bought the “last round” now we should return the favour buy him a drink. Huh? Don’t know exactly what he drank, but it was not cheap, and at our expenses.

Still do not believe that (1) he suggested it and (2) we actually complied. Needless to say, I won’t be back and neither will my friend…

I agree but, what Nicke says also makes sense, the constant hiking of rents and key money, in all sectors of business is driving businesses to financial ruin.

This is 'high season'. or so I'm told, and the famous brand shop next door to mine grossed 80000 last month. Rent money is knocking on 200000 per month. Does not take a genius to work out that this is not viable.

Lack of farangs has shown the shop I have there fall by 40% on last year and the mix has gone down from 60% farang to 20%. Hell of a turnaround.

Luckily we can sustain the lows but, I wonder how many others can??

Of course some bars owners are unrealistic or just being panic of how to survive. While some girls I took were more than happy to go 2000 bahts for LT (well, I know I could pay 1500 for that but just don't have the heart of not being generous in these days), there are also girls that ask for 3000 bahts for an hour (I think she meant ST) or 5000 for overnight. Of course, they won't be in my menu and wouldn't even get a drink from me and my friend.:
