If we are comparing the scene to what it used to be. I was in Phuket in 1988. I had not planned on travelling there but I ran into a old friend from my hometown in Oz in Singapore. So after a couple of months in Koh Samui I headed over. I knew my buddy was up to some michief, but I guess chose to remain ignorant. Anyway, unbeknownst to me he been arrested (luckily in Oz not Singapore) on the way back to Oz - big time. and of course I turn up in Phuket and introduce myself as an old friend. Everyong was "Yeah right!" - I knew nothing about this. A couple of nights later I am at his house about 3ks NE of Patong when 3 tough young local lads front up on dusk, wanting me to get my bike, one of them would come with me, and follow them to their bosses. Anyway I wasn't too alarmed, ignorance CAN be bliss. Told the guys to chill and I'd be heading out in a hour and would follow them then. So I left them with some beer and Johnny Walker while I went and had a shower. came out and packed a few cones. Then another few. I knew something was up but am not a total wilting violet and was finding it quite amusing, these guys were kids from my perspective. I quickly realised it was a macho thing and they had to keep up with me. So another few billies (dynamite from Samui). Another stiff whisky all round. These tough guys were getting very very relaxed. The guy on my left was nodding off on my shoulder. The boss on my right eventually thought he'd save face and summonsed his crew to leave. As he was getting up (we're all sitting cross legged in a circle) a pistol fell out of his jeans into my lap. It was the final straw for them. I politely handed the gun up to him, offered they could stay and sleep it off if they wanted to but they wanted out of there. Last I saw the three of them seforum.xxxgering down the drive pushing their bike ( I listened for 5 miin's and didn't hear them try to ride it).
OK, so funny story, But the fact was they were prepared to come and intimidate a total stranger, new to the area with both strength of numbers and a pistol, so I don't think it was all peace and light back then. I went searching for answers immediately after this. I wasn't impressed, and soon realised there were a lot of hard drugs going through Phuket in those days. My indignation impressed upon my old friend's unsavoury partners that I was not in any way linked to his bust.
It was also a red light area even then. I thought it was a bit of fun, being younger and having more bravado. I saw the lads out and about over the next few days - but they avioded me, not surprisingly. I didn't make a big joke out of them and I think that was appreciated.
I had spent preceding 4 weeks in Wat Bang Pu (or something like that, temple of water lilies, Samui)) and WOULD have been surprised to see violence there
