Sometimes people on here do paint a much darker picture than is reality. For example, how many actual tuk-tuk rides end up in a dispute ? 1 in 100 ? 1 in 1,000 ? 1 in 1,000,000 ? Whilst it is good to make people aware of what might happen if you upset a tuk-tuk driver, it is not a daily occurance to see gangs of Thais beating up a tourist for not paying the extra 50baht. That said, it does happen from time to time.
With regards to the touts, whilst I do not agree with them shoving obscene pictures under peoples noses, I too do not see too much wrong in what they do. We can't keep wrapping first time Patong tourists in cotton wool, they have to learn to fend for themselves.
Nobody has answered my question about how much the second beer will cost after the 550baht one. If the price goes down to "normal" levels, then what is the problem ? The tout has earned his 300baht commission for that customer who is now sat in the bar having a drink and hopefully a good time. If he is paying 550baht for every beer, then it is a scam for sure and even the bar owner is at fault, but what is wrong with paying 300baht to be shown a bar where you go and have a few beers ? If you enjoy yourself, then it was probably money well spent, but if you didn't then you put it down to experience. Some people might like the place, go in there and then after having paid for the 550baht beer, they then resort to paying 100/120/150 for a drink, which from what I gather is the going drinks rate for places like this. Where is harm in having a 300baht "finders fee" loaded on top ? If you spend a couple of hours in there and enjoy yourself, you know where the place is and you obviously won't pay the "finders fee" next time, as you know where the place is.
The tricks of jumping in to the bar in front of an unsuspecting customer, is pretty much the same as above. You get "done" once and if your head is screwed on the right way, you will make sure it doesn't happen again.
To sum up, I don't particularly like these touts and think it's a shame that Bangla Road now has them in the same way as places like Pattaya etc but that's life and there's not much we're gonna do to change it, hoiwever much we rant about it. The only way to fight back is to raise threads like this and make as many people aware as to the ways and tricks of these guys. After that, it's up to the individual.
