OK agreed.. Also bear in mind that this is journalism which will always be looking to sensationalize either point of view.. Also this was published a few days ago ad probably written last week or more when it was not picking up.

I also agree that getting rid of the bars and girls completely will be an almost impossible task but creating an atmosphere where it is tough for the bars is something they can do.. It just depends how puritanical they wish to go.. Me I think the whole thing could easily blow up in thier face..

One just has to look at how quickly they worked to get things cleaned up so that the bars could be reopened. Sort of a reverse about face on previous quotes, "the nightlife scene is not needed for Patong to survive"

my 1st paragraph was just a response that it might be the case alot of people might be bugging out of their nearest and dearest, i.e. Patong and heading to Pattaya, that being the possible case they might want to look at Pattaya forums as Phuket may be of no interest to them anymore

The blessing part is related and concerns all the stories of ghosts etc, which have frightened many BG's away or dont want to come back & goimg by the statements some BM's too. There will be a blessing to try and put these ghosts to rest

We will be in bkk on 28feb, don't know when we will head south as we have some things to take care of up north, but no later than my bday...12mar as I have plans...hopefully things will all work out for that to happen, as you know life gets complicated by many things, my china trip has been pushed back once again, so who really knows?

Just informed by my agent, Thai Airway still have flights from Hong Kong to Phuket (return flight has to transit in Bangkok). They have a promotion here. If you go in pair, it will be cheaper. The agent quotes me a price of HK$1900 (US$244) + tax for a return ticket with option to stay behind in Bangkok.

The main problem is that the travelagents have to wait for the department of foreign affairs to give the all-clear. If the goverment advise against tourists going there, the agents and companys have to deal with all sorts of insurance issues if they still want to operate in the area.

Some good news; I read in the paper yesterday that all the major tour-operators in Norway are fully booked from February onwards, and will be sending tourists to Phuket and Krabi again come February.

I bet there's hardly a square foot of London that doesn't have a body under it; I found out the other day that the first V2 missile ever fired at London landed about 500 meters away from where I live!

Being totally brutal about it - any bodies still in the sea after all this time are fish food, there's next to no chance of a body being washed up after a month, and any bodies buried on the beach would have been disinterred when the diggers were cleaning up weeks ago.

If locals are scared of ghosts, fine, that's their custom and they take it seriously, but farangs who worry about this kind of thing are just being...dicks basically.

Most people are a little superstitious, completely irrationally. Many Thai people really do believe in the ghost under the threshold, the evil spirit under the tree in Patong, the importance of the shrines around and about even if we think it is a load of nonsense.

I think that the death of so many people on the coast in Thailand is a problem for the spiritual well being of many Thai people. It may seem out of proportion to us here but nevertheless it is real enough and should not be lightly discounted in the regeneration process.

As for you IJ, I cannot see how your boss can prevent you from going back to Patong now that you are such a celebrity there. Just tell him that your public awaits....

This article from the Timesonline describes Jack Straw being taken aback by the sight of (two) sunbathers on Patong Beach 64 kilometres 'from where it is thought 1,500 died in two minutes on Boxing Day.' The officials tried to explain they wanted life to move on and more tourists to help regeneration and for the Foreign Office to rescind its advice not to travel to any Thai resorts.

It also claims that casualty figures for Patong were supressed by authorities, and I must admit I can't find any real figures for Patong. I heard, while I was there, that several tens of deaths were concentrated in the beachfront Ocean Plaze and a nearby hotel with below ground level dining and shopping/offices, but haven't seen any offcial reports of numbers.

Well I do not say it doesn't excist in Patong, but I have never, ever been confronted with it! I think it doesn't excist! I do know that I met some people who went to the river Kwai and that a little boy was offering his services to them!

Proberly, again a non well documented journalist! I do know that thailand IS doing something against this arwful kind of business!
