I personally don't mind who works there and actually like meeting other nationalities when abroad but these themed pubs whether they be Irish, German, British or whatever are there to attract people from their "home" country and if that market isn't there then it sorta makes sense that they don't do too well. I was in Benidorm a few years ago and found a nice place to eat called Yorkshire pride, full of Yorkshire staff, full of Yorkshire customers. A lot of people like the home away from home aspect of travelliing, for my money it sorta defies the purpose of travelling to hang about with people you can talk to any day of the week at home.

Canada definitely shows much more international sports than the US
in Canada you walk into a bar, you are just as likely to see a football game on than a basketball game
also, have rugby, cricket and possibly hurling, i honestly don't have a clue what that is

EDIT: hurling is called field hockey here and very popular high school female sport

i have never seen any men playing hurling/field hockey on tv in North America

i do know that it is popular with Indians and 2 Indian taxi drivers were on the Indian Olympic team for it

Lead to believe the are on longer leases (and that its land use rights sor por kor) plus they are quite thin.. So while they could be face lifted or made into other retail they are much less appealing to redevelop into something larger.

But theres for sale and for sale.. I have heard Mollys for sale multiple times post Tsunami but each time it sounded like a pie in the sky price, so for sale only if the buyer really was crazy (based on the idea its on leased land not freehold).

They are institutions.. The kind of place an expat maybe doesnt go often, but are nice to know they are there or when you really feel like a dodgy Guiness or a bit of AC and a pub meal. Had some very messy Paddies days start in those.

Hurling and field hocky very different..

Hurling played at club and local level is 2 teams of men, with large clubs, going into battle.. Can be a brutal game.. One of the hardest IMO.

I live in Phuket Rawai and always enjoy my trips to Bangala though not that many trips to Patong now a days. Moon Bar is my favorite....
I just wish that the Soi's around there like Soi Eric ..opened early instead off 9pm as years ago the best time to be on Bangala was after the beach 4pm or so chilling at the EXPAT BAR happy hours.. watching the sun sets and watching the girls go to work....

Hurling is one of of the oldest & fastest field sports in the world. I don't think it compares with field hockey other then they use sticks and a small ball. It's probably more like ice hockey without the ice and armour lol. Also called the clash of the ash since the wood used to make the sticks is ash.

Kerry don't have a good hurling team but have one of the best football teams, the Cork/Kerry rivalry is in football, Cork/Tipperary and Cork/Kilkenny would be great rivalries

Here's a clip showing how the game combines skills from all sorts of other ball games, I got hit on the head twice as a kid with a hurling stick so wasn't allowed play anymore. Some say it explains a lot about me 555. They make the kids wear helmets these days - pansies.

After the Tsunami Mollys was empty for ages as the landlords at the Banthai wanted to put the rent up and there was talk of the Hard Rock massageplanete going in there but eventually things got settled.
