Would you care to expand on this and give us some facts and figures regarding violent crime in Patong? Maybe you could bring your enormous experience of travel in the SE Asia area to bear and educate us on just how dangerous Patong is?

Didnt knew that Dublin is such a strange place. But i made a quick research in the net and we can all cool down if you are not living in south afrika. About 40.000 Killings every year , and 47 /100.000 wich is 8 times more than in US .

Seems to be a nice place for me. So i am sure we can spend a long time in patong till it would get such as strange like Johannesburg or Kapstadt.
I remember a post card i got from i girl friend over there:

heard about in other areas of phuket, the motorcycle boys, and the thai business/women/gambling disputes but i thought it would be unlikely to see it in patong itself

I was in the bar earlier that night and shook the hand of the bartender that was killed. He was a real nice guy.
Four guys came into the bar and shot him in the head.
His wife works across the soi so imagine what she's going through.
The owners of the bar are two really nice French guys.

I don't think there is a rising trend here in violence, I think it gets reported and talked about more often.

I've lived In JHB,South Africa for 30 odd years.It is dangerous however the expression that 'if you put your hand in the toilet,you will probably get sh1t on it' is relevant here,and that is probably the same for any modern place!

South Africa has been a society in 'peaceful' transition for many years now and is often thought of as a modern miracle.Just go to Palestine,Israel,Lebanon,Iraq for real problems.On the African continent we are probably the only ones who are reporting accurately(goes for HIV as well) and so statistics on the internet could be skewed.

South Africa has it's unique problems but is not as bad as you may think.We haven't been awarded the 2010 soccer world cup because we are the worst in the world-there are 'hotspots' to be avoided,the same as in 'the Bronx' in New York and Bangla Rd in Patong.

Millions of tourists come here every year without any problems and you are also welcome!

The fire in croc disco probably defines the players in this dispute. Croc Disco and all of Soi Katoy is owned by one man - a Chinese Thai named Deng. He gained his wealth by cornering the liquor delivery trade in Patong. You will often see him running the bar that sits right in the middle of the Soi. You will also see young hopped up kids who are the enforcers.

Deng fell on hard times and had to bring in Bangkok partners who really know how to play hardball. If a new syndicate could pinch Deng's hold on liqour deliveries, they would quickly become rich men!

Sorry , but I would not class Bangla as "a hotspot to be avoided" , there may have been a couple of incidents recently but these are not the norm. The majority of people would not even have been aware that anything happened , and definately will not be "avoiding" the area.
