Last nights incident in Soi Tiger

Having been to South Africa, and knowing that the murder rate per capita is 5 times that of the USA, I would say take off your rose-tinted glasses.

Don't get me wrong, I like SA and have some friends there. It is clearly a success story and there are lots of positives, but safe it aint.

Yes, definitaly Nakhon Si Thammarat. Mostly policemen.
Have a friend from there. She confirms it. She and her family have a shrimpfarm. Brother in law guards at night and will shoot intruders on sight. It is normal there. No questions asked, no objections. Seems like films about the wild west where they hang horsethieves.

I spent 3 weeks in Patong in January and the only violence I saw was between BGs.

There were a few knob-heads about though.

Just wondering how you know there is more violence than 5 years ago , because according to your own posts , you've only been there twice. First time was last year , that was when your brother had a bar , the one who's name you never tell anyone.

The second time was your mysterious "time travel" visit, when your dates changed more often than a BG's clothes.




So , where do you get the idea that violence is a lot more, have you been to the local hospitals , and did they allow you to see all the "statistics" , or is this just another of your fantasies.




You definately must be going to a very different Patong than the one other BM's (myself included) visit , because during the past 9 years (3 visits per year) , I have seen less violence than you supposidly saw in 2 trips.

My view is that you are posting rubbish , purely to try and stir things up. I only hope that BM's ,especially the Newbies , see your posts for what they are , and don't allow your "negative,journalistic trash" to unfairly tarnish the reputation of a beautiful resort.

I think he just ment that if it had of being a farang that got killed, It would be world wide news, And would turn of loads of tourists from coming to Patong, Which would be bad for a few of the BMs who own bars there...

Nothing got to do with the value of a falang life compared to a Thai life IMO...

Hi duke, i am sure you can live very good in south africa and if you don´t visit the "hotspots" (they are in most big cities all over the world) there is not that risk. But i just made a quick research in the internet just to see where is the crime rate of thailand compared with other country, it came up that SA is one of the most dangerous places. As i said : i dont want to come in such a place in my live, ( please notice "such a place") does not mean just SA, but any place on the woirld which such a high violence. So you can discuss about if these statistics are right or not, and if SA is no.1 or no2 or maybe no3., the fact is its in one of the top positions. Thats all, and just wanted to see how "dangerous" Thailand or Bangkok is. I felt save when i visited it, but this is a kind of me, as i can walk through a crime scene and me doesnt care. But please dont discuss this no with me. Sorry if you felt flamed. :embrassed This was not my intension

Shark was coming across as if SA is the worst place in the world and he wouldn't like to come here.I'm just pointing out as a person who lives here that it's not all bad.I accept it can be dangerous,especially if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time,but so can any other place,including Tiger in Patong.

Thanks 4 your reply,I guess we feel patriotic here,even though the stats show us in a bad light re crime.
We've really got 2 economies here,a first and a 3rd,and the challenge has been too build the middle-class after the disaster of the apartheid era.So obviously it takes time,and SA really is still a society in transition.Hopefully in10-15 years we'll be the Singapore of Africa!

Anyway as we are mostly talking about an incident in Patong,I won't go on about this,except to say I can understand some people's reaction when things are blown out of context via stats or incorrect media hype.....no hard feelings mate

Shark; if you look at the stats I posted you will se that SA is No2 in the world for murder (Thailand is No 14) but of course that does not tell the whole story. Many, many of the murders in SA take place in and around shebeens in the townships which are not regular tourist haunts.

There is ALOT of violence that never gets reported so there are no meaningful statistics but there has been alot more violence in patong then there was 5 years ago...........just go the local hospitals and see.

Of course violence is not as bad as SA but in terms of incidents per population...........I'm sure the statistics of assault etc are creeping up pretty fast.

It pays to be careful.........even in patong

Ok, more broad statements and no facts, so let's try a different question

How many violent incidents did you personally witness on any single one of your trips to Patong? My answer to that question would be zero.

I'm not saying that Patong has no violence, just that sweeping generalisations along the 'thuggish behaviour' lines are really not helpful, or accurate in my experience.
