I agree that it seems quieter but not sure if it actually is that way. With early closing, everything gets compressed into a few hours. So it seems busier. The upside is (I think) there is more energy and everywhere is busier rather than shifting place to place. Of course the losers are the after hours places. For example feel sorry for the new Disco beside Safari as they are totally dead in normal hours and the place looks alright. The other part that sucks is it is a lot harder to walk back to your car without getting your pockets frisked twenty times.

Well lets just say that from what I know of the jetski boys a single ding gets rebilled weekly to anyone that looks liek they can intimidate into taking it.. and some repairs I have known of cost far more then the purchase price that the person bought the jetski for.

As to the shouldnt rent it.. Well thats what I do, however is it to much to expect to not be ripped off, bullied, threatened with beatings and scammed while doing something as simple on holiday as renting a jetski for 20 mins.. If thats what Phuket has come to (and thats your defense, thats just the way it is so live with it) then thats a said comment on how bad it is.

You make it sound so simple Thaicam but reading seasoned pros and ex pats, it suggests that the practice of overcharging or getting commissions courtesy of the rich tourist is ingrained in the population who are in contact with them, and the same could be said for any 3rd world country who is embracing the tourist coinage.
I have not experienced the go go bar or tuk tuk situations but the constant overcharging and attempts to squeeze that extra baht from me did leave a sour taste in my mouth.
So i think the newbie should take heed of the advice given. Although not a lot of money some may decide not to repeat that experience.
As you suggest they should try to confirm prices and details but i fear these confrontations will always be ready to happen.

Perhaps less outside Patong and the 10% are bars that have no interest in ever opening late (bar / restaurant type places)

And one of them stands to make many more millions if the town shuts at 2 and the 'out of town' is left to claim the 2 - 5 or 6 crowd.

I personally find 2 too early.. But in a perverse way the closing system does force you to get out and do things with your evening rather than end up in one or two bars just drinking till your done. Your forced out onto the circuit if you want to keep going and that can make nights interesting even if its an inconvenience.

I would not have objections to a 3:30 - 4am closure rule for bars and another hour or two for clubs.
